Major League Baseball team owners do not seem to care about baseball but do you know who does? College baseball, BYU Cougars and Milwaukee Panthers. There is nothing like a midweek series to keep you going until the rush of weekend college baseball. The BYU Cougars want to bridge that gap.
The BYU Cougars will head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take on the Milwaukee, Panthers. The Cougars started off the season with surprising losses in consecutive games against Indiana State and Marshall University. Since the first game of the doubleheader against Marshall University, the Cougars have not lost a game bringing their overall record to 5-2.
Starting pitcher Janzen Keisel has impressed over ten innings so far. Kiesel has struck out 16 and only walked four showing impressive command early in the season. Keisel is joined by fellow rotation mate Jack Sterner. Sterner has thrown 9 1/3 innings over two starts with 11 strikeouts and only two walks. Sterner is prone to giving up too many hits (13) and can be a bit wild (2 wild pitches) but is a good second starter for the Cougars.
On the offensive side, Cole Gambill, Mitch McIntyre and Brock Watkins have led the charge. Junior outfielder Cole Gambill leads the team with a .552 slugging percentage, two homeruns and 12 RBI’s across 29 at-bats. Mitch McIntyre, previously a reliever, has really impressed at the plate as it appears a decision was made for him to focus on the field. Through 26 at-bats, McIntyre has complied a .346/.423/.500 slash line with six walks and a team leading nine hits.
Sophomore Brock Watkins has shown tremendous improvement in his third year on the Cougars. With subpar years at the plate in 2020 and 2021, Watkins has come on strong with a .320/.393/.520 slash line in 25 at bats. Across seven games, Watkins has also hit two triples and a double on eight total hits and six runs scored. BYU features a potent offensive lineup.
