The 2022 NFL offseason is about to begin for “The City of Brotherly Love.” The Eagles are the 14th youngest team in the NFL, ensuring that we will see plenty of changes amongst the Eagles 53-man roster. No matter the position, new opportunities will be created. The Eagles have an abundance of talent to sift through.
With free agency quickly approaching, the Eagles will look at the plethora of talent available, whether it is to improve at a certain position or to replace a player who isn’t cutting it. Here are a few guys who could have a breakout season.
Kenneth Gainwell, RB
With his rookie season now under his belt, things are looking bright for the young back. Gainwell finished his rookie campaign with 544 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns. He became just one of two rookies in Eagles history who were drafted in the fifth round or later with 500+ scrimmage yards and six touchdowns.
Gainwell seems to have a knack for making big plays whenever he gets the ball in his hands. As the third or fourth running back option, Gainwell made his presence felt on the field. Nick Sirianni will work to give Gainwell more opportunities during the NFL 2022 season.
Milton Williams, DT
Williams completed his rookie season with two sacks, 30 tackles, six tackles for a loss, and six quarterback hits. As the backup defensive tackle to Fletcher Cox, Williams was able to get experience at different positions along the defensive line. The rookie was able to complete 456 snaps by dividing his time between the inside and the edge.
Williams improved week by week during his rookie campaign, which is a great sign for the Eagles. There is an abundance of veteran talent who can pass their wisdom onto Williams. This offseason is a great way to hone the knowledge Williams now possesses after completing his first NFL season.
Jalen Reagor, WR
The inconsistent receiver is facing a real threat of being cut from the Eagles, or out of the NFL completely. With year three quickly approaching, 2022 will be the sink or swim season for the young wideout.
In Reagor’s first two seasons, he only managed to rack up an abysmal 64 receptions, 695 yards, and three touchdowns. Not a good start for a first-round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Eagles had expectations that Reagor would have produced considerably more than what he currently has.
Reagor’s NFL career could potentially be on the line during his third season.
Jalen Hurts, QB
During his first full season as the starting quarterback, Hurts was able to lead the Eagles to the playoffs. The Eagles finished their season 9-8 but ultimately fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their lone playoff game, ending the Eagles’ unpredictable 2021 NFL Season.
Hurts completed his first two seasons with an impressively combined 4,205 passing yards, 1,138 rushing yards, and 35 touchdowns. However, Hurts is going into the 2022 season with something he has never faced before. Hurts, for the first time in his career, will operate under the same offense for a second consecutive year. With Hurts already having experience with the same offensive scheme, will he be able to propel himself and the team even further?
Breakout Or Bust
As a new season is on the horizon, The Eagles will be paying close attention to their young and veteran players. To some players, this is just another season added to their lucrative career. For others, this could be their final shot to prove themselves. Careers could be made or ended in the 2022 NFL Season.
For certain players, a breakout season is a must to keep their NFL dreams alive. The Eagles have plenty of draft picks to replace subpar talent. So, with the 2022 NFL season approaching, who will have a breakout season? Who will be a bust?
