Just when it seemed like the Dallas Cowboys were heading in the wrong direction in cap space, moves are now being made. While these are no cap-breaking moves, they are necessary. Dallas has released kicker Greg Zuerlein and waived tight end Blake Jarwin with an injury designation, the team announced. This looks to be the first of many moves Dallas will need to make to get a better cap situation.

Greg Zuerlein

Zuerlein appeared in 32 regular-season games for Dallas after signing in 2020. He converted on 82.9 percent of his field goals and 89.3 percent of his extra points. He carries a cap hit of $2.8 million and by releasing him, Dallas saves $2.485 million. Again, not a huge dent in their cap problem but it is something.

Zuerlein’s signing was exciting at first considering the kicker problems Dallas had going on. However, this past season was a rough one for Zuerlein. He missed a lot of much-needed field goals and extra points. In the end, a kicker who isn’t probably 90 percent or higher for you, does not belong. It is time for Dallas to find a younger cheaper option.

Blake Jarwin

Blake Jarwin has not played a full season since 2019. He tore his ACL in the first game of the 2020 season. 2021 was not good for him either considering he became the backup and eventually landed on the injured reserve list in November. All of this came right after signing an extension in the summer before the 2020 season.

Jarwin carries a cap hit of $5.85 million which Dallas can afford. However, they would pay that to a tight end that has actually played and produced, not an injured one. The reality is that Dallas is trying to not take any risks of losing big names and Jarwin was on the chopping block.
