Chiefs Sign Former First-Round Pick Corey Coleman: Initial Reactions

What are your thoughts on the Chiefs signing Corey Coleman?

Today it was announced that the Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Cleveland Browns first-round pick, wide receiver Corey Coleman:

The Browns drafted Coleman out of Baylor in the 2016 NFL Draft. He caught 138 passes for 2,482 yards and 31 touchdowns in his sophomore and junior seasons. He was the first wide receiver taken in the draft, showing the high rating he had among the NFL community.

Unfortunately, Coleman has not lived up to that rating. Since that draft, he has only played in 27 games, starting in just 19 of them. Injuries have been his major issue, breaking his hand in 2017 and 2018. He tore his ACL before the 2019 season. He was suspended for six games in 2021 for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

He has bounced around a bit, as the Chiefs are now his fifth team starting his seventh year in the league. Coleman is a classic Brett Veach high reward with zero risk signing. Coleman does have the talent of a first-round draft pick. He’s a 5’11, 185-pound speedster. He has solid hands and a good football IQ.

His route tree has always needed sharpening, and he’ll need to get back into football shape after not playing in a game since 2018. If Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes can somehow, unlike his first-round talent, the Chiefs would add needed depth to their wide receiver room. If he flames out for any reason, it costs the Chiefs a cup of coffee. This is nothing to get excited about, but something to also keep an eye on through off-season camps.
