2022 Boston Red Sox Season Preview: Projected Lineup And Rotation

The Boston Red Sox ended 2021 with a loss in the AL Championship Series. They hope to return to the playoffs in 2022; by @dmullen37

The Boston Red Sox took an interesting path this off season. They spent much of the beginning of the offseason giving one-year deals to veteran pitchers and bringing back a familiar face in Jackie Bradley, Jr. After winning 92 games in 2021 and making it to the American League Championship Series, most felt that the Red Sox would make a big splash. They did but it was one of the more dangerous signings.

The Boston Red Sox swooped in and signed Trevor Story to a six-year, $140 million deal. The problem? The well-documented failures of Trevor Story away from Coors Field. His slash lines have a glaring delta that should make anytime think twice about committing nine figures to him. Using a small sample size from last year, Story hit .296/.365/.515 at Coors Field. Away from Coors Field, Story hit a miserable .203/.292/.426. Trevor Story’s away spits would most likely get him demoted across 162 games. Consequently, Story will begin his Red Sox career at second base with Xander Bogaerts cemented at shortstop.

Projected Lineup (ZiPS Projections)

  1. OF – Enrique Hernandez (.264/.339/.813)
  2. OF – Alex Verdugo (.292/.350/.790)
  3. 3B – Rafael Devers (.283/.348/.540)
  4. DH – JD Martinez (.271/.342/.824)
  5. 2B – Trevor Story (.265/.338/.832)
  6. SS – Xander Bogaerts (.287/.360/.862)
  7. 1B – Bobby Dalbec (.228/.303/.762)
  8. C – Christian Vazquez (.259/.308/.386)
  9. OF – Jackie Bradley Jr. (.220/.293/.659)

Projected Rotation (ZiPS Projections)

  1. SP – Nathan Eovaldi (154 IP, 1.21 WHIP, 166 K)
  2. SP – Nick Pivetta (144 IP, 1.36 WHIP, 148 K)
  3. SP – Tanner Houck (97 IP, 1.34 WHIP, 105 K)
  4. SP – Michael Wacha (112 IP, 1.42 WHIP, 100 K)
  5. SP – Rich Hill (119 IP, 1.34 WHIP, 103 K)

Three Bold Predictions for Boston Red Sox

Jackie Bradley Jr. wins a Gold Glove in the outfield. In a return to his former team, Jackie Bradley Jr. was brought back to provide outfield defense. Bradley Jr. possesses Gold Glove caliber defense which makes up for his below average performance at the plate.

The Red Sox will return to the playoffs. Further, though it seems like the Boston Red Sox window is closing, this could be the last year for some mainstays. With that, an extra sense of competition enters and players want to win one more for an organization they could be leaving.

Nick Pivetta has break out year. Additionally, Nick Pivetta has been starving for a breakout year since entering the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies. This year, some pressure is off but different pressures are added for Pivetta. He has one more year of comfortability with the organization and players leading to the potential for a breakout year.
