WATCH: Madison Bumgarner Gets Ejected In First Inning

WATCH: Madison Bumgarner was ejected after a weird interaction with first base umpire Dan Bellino.

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner had a short day of work after getting ejected in the first inning. During a lengthy inspection of Bumgarner’s throwing hand by the first-base umpire, Bumgarner had an interesting reaction:

This hand massage was quite longer than the opposing pitcher received. And, as others have pointed out, the umpire starred at Madison Bumgarner the entire time instead of looking at Bumgarner’s hand. Bumgarner had every right to be upset.

The umpire, on the other hand, was trying to make it about him for some reason. Major league umpires are consistently attempting to turn games into the Ump Show with interactions like this.

Here is a great view of the umpires eyes the entire time he is massaging Bumgarner’s throwing hand.

To his credit, Bumgarner is having a solid age-32 season. Through five starts, Madison Bumgarner has pitched 23 innings while only giving up 15 hits. His BB/9 is up a few ticks (4.3) compared to his career average of 2.1 but his results, thus far, are better than his 2021 season.

Umpire Dan Bellino’s behavior is odd and somewhat inexcusable. Interestingly, looking at his home plate scorecard, courtesy of, he ranks 25th out of 84 ranked umpires in pitch calling accuracy. Bellino is also the 17th ranked umpire when it comes to average consistency. All in all, he is a mediocre umpire who showed below average hand massaging technique today.
