The Baltimore Orioles lead the day with two top prospects having stellar nights. Another prospect, from the Boston Red Sox, had himself a cycle! Who are they?

The Baltimore Orioles organization headlines the Minor League Stars Of The Day for Tuesday, May 17th, 2022. Although the Baltimore Orioles major league team leaves much to be desired, they do harbor some bright spots within their minor league system. Two of those bright spots have made the list today.

A start of a new series for baseball fans begins today. Every day we will look at the best statistical games from the night prior in the minor leagues. Not only does this allow fans to get to know their favorite teams’ prospects but dynasty fantasy players can see a quick glimpse of who might be heating up.

Each day we will pick the three or four best statistical batting games and add honorable mentions at the end of the post. Every minor league baseball player is eligible from Single-A to Triple-A. Players can appear multiple days in a row. If we missed someone or something, let us know in our social media channels. Gunnar Henderson – Baltimore Orioles – Double-A

Top-100 prospect Gunnar Henderson leads off our list with a monster game for the Bowie Baysox in Double-A. Henderson went 2-5 at the plate with both hits registering as home runs. On the year, Henderson now has six homeruns for the Baltimore Orioles’ Double-A affiliate. Last year, Henderson had 17 across three levels. Thus far, the shortstop and third basemen is on pace to set a career high in homeruns. Henderson added three runs batted in, two runs scored and a hit by pitch.

A high-school draft pick in the 2nd round of the 2019 draft, Henderson has split his time between shortstop and the hot corner, almost evenly. The 20-year-old lefty batter split his time across three levels in 2021 after sitting out 2020 due to COVID. Despite struggling a bit at the plate in Hi-A (.231/.343/.775), the Baltimore Orioles were impressed by his continued power with nine homeruns in 289 plate appearances with Aberdeen.

Based on a gathering of scouting reports and video reporting, Henderson has a chance to turn the 2019 Baltimore Orioles draft into an organizational shifting proposition with Adley Rutschman being the Orioles first round pick. Henderson has crazy athleticism and rates as having above average tools across the board. You will see the 6’2” infielder sometime during the 2023 season.

Ceddanne Rafaela – Boston Red Sox – Hi-A

Ceddanne Rafaela is a name you may not have heard of. He does not show up on any top prospect lists but he caught some eyes last night after hitting for the cycle. In five plate appearances, Rafaela hit his eighth homerun of the year and, of course, added a single, double and triple. Rafaela has 10 doubles through 150 plate appearances while slashing .312/.353/.921 as a 21-year-old playing against opponents that are, on average, 1.6 years older than him.

The 5’8” utility player has seen time at second base and short stop with the lions share of his playing time occurring in center field. Although his ceiling is not that of a superstar, if he refines his approach at the plate, Rafaela could easily turn into a Chris Taylor-like utility player for the major league Boston Red Sox.

Grayson Rodriguez – Baltimore Orioles – Triple-A

Grayson Rodriguez is a Baltimore Orioles prospect you should know and he is a consensus Top-100 prospect. Drafted in the first round of the 2018 draft out of Central Heights High School in Texas, Rodriguez has consistently improved his game across multiple levels and seasons. The 6’5” right hander has a great, solid frame with a little more room to fill out.

As a 22-year-old in Triple-A, Rodriguez is playing against opponents that are almost five years older than him. Despite this glaring difference, Rodriguez has been stellar in his first taste of Triple-A baseball. In eight games started, Rodriguez has compiled a 2.65 ERA and a stellar 1.018 WHIP. On top of that, Rodriguez has shown increased command with 57 strikeouts against only 13 walks. Throughout his career, the future Baltimore Oriole has limited homeruns only allowing one in 2022 across 37 1/3 innings pitched.

Last night, Rodriguez showed out in 5 1/3 innings striking out 11 opponents while only issuing three free passes and three hits. Over his last three starts, Rodriguez has only given up one run while throwing 15 2/3 innings striking out 24 and walking eight. Not a bad string of starts for a pitcher who has eyes on the major leagues in 2022.
