Titans Add Carson Green, Release Derwin Gray

The Tennessee Titans chose to get younger on Monday, signing Carson Green off of the waiver wire. Will he make any impact in Tennessee this season?

The Tennessee Titans hit the waiver wire on Monday, signing former Texas A&M and Houston Texans offensive lineman Carson Green off of the waiver wire. He spent the 2021 season on the Texans’ practice squad after going undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft.

To make room for him on the roster, the Titans cut Derwin Gray, who appeared in five games back in 2020 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Gray was signed by the Steelers in 2019 to a four-year contract after being selected in the seventh round (219th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. The Steelers released him toward the end of the 2020 season, and the Jacksonville Jaguars signed him during free agency in March of 2021. Gray ended up cut before the team’s final preseason game, and the Titans added him to their practice squad.

What does Carson Green bring that Derwin Gray can’t?

For starters, Derwin Gray no longer fits eligibility to be in the less-experienced practice squad spots that the Titans hold. Each practice squad had ten spots available to younger, less experienced players with three or fewer years in the NFL. Gray enters his fourth year and won’t be eligible for any of those spots, and it appears the Titans don’t believe that he will make the 53-man roster.

Carson Green, on the other hand, offers the ability to work on the practice squad.

From a football standpoint, Green has a higher ceiling than Gray because of his size. Green’s length, if it can be controlled, could potentially be a much stronger fit if he was ever pressed into service with injuries. If he can learn and develop over the next few years, Green has a chance to be what Gray could never provide for the Titans – depth on the 53-man roster.
