Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Agrees To Massive Contract Extension: Initial Reactions

Will Cardinals QB Kyler Murray lead his team to a Super Bowl now that he has signed a new deal?

Will Cardinals QB Kyler Murray lead his team to a Super Bowl now that he has signed a new deal?

After all the drama on social media between Kyler Murray and the Cardinals on a new contract extension, the deal is officially done. According to Adam Schefter, the Cardinals and star quarterback Kyler Murray have agreed to a five-year, $230.5 million deal. The new deal keeps Murray in Arizona through the 2028 season. Murray is guaranteed $160 million and will be the second highest paid quarterback per year at $46.1 million. This is a massive show of confidence and investment in Murray as their future centerpiece.

Murray was originally going to make $5.3 million this season with a cap hit of $11.4M. The Cardinals had already picked up his fifth-year option in 2023 which guaranteed Murray $29.7M. Murray was also not eligible for any kind of extension until the last day of the 2021 season. As soon as that hit, Murray and his agent started the roller coaster of money talks. With worries of Murray not attending training camp, the deal getting signed has to be a huge weight lifted off the Cardinal’s shoulders.

Since being drafted number one overall in 2019, Murray has been everything the Cardinals hoped. In just three seasons, Murray has 11,480 passing yards and 70 passing touchdowns. On top of that, he also has 1,786 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. Murray is the ideal dual-threat QB in every way and the Cardinals are paying him for those stats.

Final Thoughts, What’s Next For Murray?

Now that he has the bag secured, Murray can now comfortably report to training camp. The Cardinals were already worried about the start of the season considering DeAndre Hopkins is suspended. But now that Murray is signed long-term, the drama amount can lessen.

Murray has turned the Cardinals back into a legitimate contender at least in the regular season. His only issue is not performing well in the back half of the season. In his lone playoff appearance so far, he failed there as well. However, at only 24 years old, Murray has plenty of time to fix his late season and playoff woes. He has the skillset to become a top-five QB in this league and his team is on the cusp of once again competing for a title.
