Will Julio Jones have a revival year in Tampa Bay? Or will we see the same injury-riddled problems from recent seasons?
When Tom Brady and the Bucs seemed to be one of the best teams in the NFL, they made a splash in free agency. Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones has signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to Adam Schefter, Jones had an interest from Green Bay but Tampa landed Jones first. Tom Brady will now be throwing to Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, and Julio Jones.
The Titans released Jones in March, just one season after acquiring him in a trade from the Falcons. The Titans traded away two draft picks for Jones, but he was riddled with injuries in the end. Jones appeared in just ten games because of injuries and had a career-low 31 receptions for 434 yards. and just one touchdown catch. It was the second straight season in which Jones barely played due to injury.
Julio Jones Hall Prior To Injuries
In Atlanta, Jones became the franchise leader in receptions (63) and yards (12,896. He is second only to Roddy White in touchdown receptions (63). His 91.9 receiving yards per game is the best per-game average in NFL history. Jones also leads the NFL in receiving yards since 2014, and Mike Evans leads the NFL in touchdown catches (75) during that span. Now, they’re both on the same team catching passes from Tom Brady.
Where Julio Jones Fits In With Tampa Bay
Jones joins a receiver room that includes Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Tyler Johnson, Scotty Miller, and Breshad Perriman, and former Falcon Russell Gage. Julio will likely see a good amount of playing time with Chris Godwin still on the mend from his ACL tear. While Russell Gage and Mike Evans will also see significant touches, I think Julio will want to prove himself. There is no better way to prove you still have gas left in the tank than to show Tom Brady you can still ball out.
Julio Jones enters the season at 33 years old. This feels a lot like when Randy Moss joined Tom Brady at 30 years old. A revival contract that led to much more than just another year of football and paychecks. I would not be surprised if Julio plays rather well with Brady throwing him the ball. However, it would also not surprise me if Julio got hurt again which would suck for him.
