The Philadelphia Eagles took the trip to Detroit to play the Lions and escaped with a 38-35 victory.
The Eagles found momentum along the way, but the Lions kept in the game with timely completions by Jared Goff and a solid running attack. Jalen Hurts and the running unit scored four touchdowns as a group. Philadelphia racked up 455 yards as a group and held on to the ball with zero turnovers.
Philadelphia had some new season butterflies. Detriot got the ball first and drove right down for a quick score by Jamaal Williams. Jalen Hurts started slowly by going 0/5 on his first five throws. After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles irrupted. The group scored 24 points, including a rushing touchdown by Hurts and Miles Sanders each and a pick-six by Cornerback James Bradberry. Deandre Swift kept the Lions afloat with a rushing touchdown two minutes before the end of the half.
In the third quarter, Kenneth Gainwell scored a two-yard touchdown, and the Lions responded with a touchdown to Amon-Ra St. Brown later in the quarter. The Eagles did not take that lightly as Boston Scott responded with another goal-line rushing score. Eagles entered the fourth with a 38-21 lead.
The Lions did not give up until the very end. Jamaal Williams added a touchdown to start the quarter, and D.J. Chark beat Darius Slay to put the game with a single score. On a 3rd and two, Sanders seemed stuffed in the backfield before finding a second push and rushing for 24 yards. If that didn’t put the game away, Jalen Hurts found wiggle room and converted a 4th and one Quarterback sneak.
Player of the Game: A.J. Brown
He racked up ten catches for 155 yards. This set the record for most receiving yards for an Eagles’ player in their Philadelphia debut.
The Eagles (1-0) started the season off right on offense, but the defense will be watching film and learning from plenty of mistakes. They will be taking on the Minnesota Vikings for Week Two on Monday Night Football for the Eagles’ home opener.
