The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Detroit Lions 38-35 this past Sunday, September 11th. It was a team effort, and they pulled through in the end. With an all-around team effort, here are the Week One Awards for the Eagles.
The awards are Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Game, Defensive Player of the Game, Special Teams Player of the Game, and Rookie of the Game. A player can get two or more awards and may repeat as many times as needed.
Most Valuable Player And Offensive Player Of The Game- A.J. Brown
This passing offense is one game in, and the changes haven’t gone unnoticed. A.J. Brown recorded the most receiving yards in a Philadelphia Eagles debut. The MVP recorded ten catches for 155 yards. While he did not put any points up on the board, Brown set up the offense several times for scores.
Brown hauled in a catch a 16-yard catch to bring the team to the Detriot five-yard line to start the second quarter. Then, Brown caught a 54-yard pass from Jalen Hurts to set up a Field Goal by Jake Elliot.
The Running Backs did great as a group, but these are single-man awards. Brown caught several passes from Hurts over the middle which shows the confidence Hurts has in his own development. Great game for the newly acquired wide receiver.
Defensive Player Of The Game- Marcus Epps
Marcus Epps showed much improvement in this one game alone. Epps set the tone on the defense’s second drive. Quarterback Jared Goff lofted a throw to Running Back Amon-Ra Saint Brown and Epps made a big hit for a two yard loss. Epps recorded ten tackles with eight tackles being solo.
The run defense could use fixing and some coverage work will be needed for next week’s matchup with Justin Jefferson and the Vikings. For now, Epps showed out for this defense with his great tackling.
Special Teams Player Of The Game- Jake Elliot
Between the kicking, punting, and returning, Jake Elliot makes this easy. The Pro Bowl kicker went 5/5 on his extra points and 1/1 on his field goals. Elliot’s 23 yard field goal proved to be helpful as the Eagles pulled away by three. Elliot makes this Week One special teams player award very easy.
Rookie Of The Game-Jordan Davis
There weren’t many candidates and Davis only recorded two total tackles, but there is more to the story. Davis recorded the highest Pro Football Focus grade of any Rookie Defensive lineman and his on-off the field difference showed. The Eagles were letting up ten yards a carry with Davis on the sideline. However, the Eagles defense only allowed 2.9 yards with Davis on the field in Week One.
