We take a look at which teams after three weeks, have absolutely no chance of competing for the 2022 National Championship.
With QB Quinn Ewers, Texas looked to be the real deal. They gave Alabama a run for their money and honestly if some calls were flipped they would have won. Texas hasn’t won a National Championship since 2005, but they might actually be back. However, with Ewers going down with an injury and a schedule that consists of #6 Oklahoma, #9 Oklahoma St, and #17 Baylor left, Texas might be in trouble with the rest of their season. I don’t see Texas winning out and getting to the Big 12 Championship game this season. And That is why Texas has no shot at winning the National Championship this year.
Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn St has looked promising this season so far, taking care of their first three games. Penn St finds themselves ranked #14 in the country. With an offense that scores 40 points per game, this team has looked good, but are they on a National Championship winning level?
However, being in the Big 10 means you have to play against #4 ranked Michigan and #3 ranked Ohio State. There’s nothing wrong with this Penn St team, but at the end of the day do you really think they are going to get a win at Michigan and at home against Ohio St? The Big 10 is known for eating itself alive. I think the Nittany Lions fall to that. I don’t think they will make the College Football Playoff, let alone the National Championship.
Arkansas has been nothing short of spectacular this season so far. Opening up beating a College Football Playoff team, the Cincinnati Bearcats, and they took care of business against decent South Carolina and Missouri St teams. KJ Jefferson is consistently the best player on the field and he has carried his team to a top 10 ranking.
Arkansas didn’t shy away from a challenge this year, by taking a non-conference game against #19 BYU. Arkansas has #23 Texas A&M, #2 Alabama, #19 BYU, and #16 Ole Miss left on their schedule. If Arkansas didn’t have the hardest ranked schedule in all of college football, I would say they have a chance. With this crazy hard schedule left, I don’t see them getting out of the SEC West with 2 or more losses.
Tennessee’s offense is incredible this season. Through three games they are averaging 52 points per game. That is tough to beat. Looking a little closer, they dropped 59 on Ball St (not a very good team) and 63 on Akron (very bad team). They did manage to put up 34 on #17 Pitt. Tennessee loves to beat up on the little guys, however the rest of their schedule doesn’t really allow them to do that.
With #20 Florida, #2 Alabama, #8 Kentucky, and #1 Georgia, Tennessee finds themselves at the beginning of a long road to the SEC Championship game. I think they struggle to get their offense going in a few of those games and their defense isn’t good enough to stop the likes of Georgia and Alabama. The Volunteers will not win the 2022 National Championship.
The last few years, we have seen Clemson at the top of the mountain. Always being in the College Football Playoff conversation and being at the top of the AP polls. Clemson is a machine. However, this year I just don’t see it. Clemson is 3-0 on the year but who have they played? Georgia Tech, Furman (who?), and Louisiana Tech.
Clemson is about to hit the toughest part of their schedule going to #21 Wake Forrest and at home against #12 North Carolina St. They also end their year with #25 Miami and a couple other solid match ups. Using the eye test, and hearing rumbles about QB DJ Uiagalelei possibly losing his starting job to back up QB Cade Klubnik. I don’t think we will see the Clemson Tigers in the National Championship this year.
These are just five of the teams I’m not confident will win the National Championship this year. They all still have a chance to prove me wrong. We will be watching them closely the rest of the season to see if they can pull off the impossible.
