With the Colts coming off one of the worst losses in franchise history, they now face the Chiefs. Can the team right the ship in a scorched earth upset?
With much of the season highly underwhelming, this week will be a huge test for the Colts. The team is an underdog in their home opener and is facing a Chiefs team who is showing no signs of stopping.
What Direction Are The Colts And Trending In?
It’s been a horrendous start to the 2022 NFL season for the Indianapolis Colts, who most have pegged to be a dark horse for the AFC South crown. However, with the recent disappointments in Houston and Jacksonville, many are wondering if this team will even put up a fight against the mighty Kansas City Chiefs, who feature Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and a boat load of weapons on offense.
Pay Attention, Colts – The Chiefs Sent The Chargers Home In Thunderous Fashion
The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of a 27-24 slugfest and a Week Two win against their division rival, the Los Angeles Chargers. Pat Mahomes threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns. The defense also came away with two sacks, one interception (which turned into a 99 yard pick-six), keeping the Chargers one dimensional the entire game. Even though statistically the Chargers out-gained them through time of possession, yards and first downs, the Chiefs still found a way to win the game.
(RING RING, RING RING) Hey, Colts. Are You There?
The Colts are coming off one of the absolute worst losses in team history, as they were handed a “donut”, on behalf of the Jacksonville Jaguars, 24-0. The game started out in a fashion very unlike the Colts, as they actually chose to receive the opening kickoff and (eventually) give the Jaguars an opportunity to receive the ball at the start of the second half. From there, everything else went down hill.
Matt Ryan started the game with an interception and the Jaguars commenced to march down the field and score the game’s first points, a touchdown by running back James Robinson. Ryan went on to finish the game with 195 yards and three interceptions. Running back Johnathan Taylor finished the game with nine carries and 54 yards.
The defense seemed out of sight and out of mind the entire game, though they did hold the Jaguars to 95 rushing yards on 36 carries. (At least the the new kicker didn’t miss any field goals and kept the ball in bounds on kickoffs.) Quarterback Trevor Lawrence looked like an MVP candidate, going 25 of 30 on his throws, with 235 yards and two touchdowns. It was definitely “The Stall in Duval”. (The Colts have yet to win a game in Jacksonville since 2014.)
For the Colts, History Could Be Their Best Friend Sunday
The last meeting between these two teams saw the Colts pull out a six point win against the Chiefs, who were fresh off a Super Bowl victory. Even though Colts Nation would love for history to repeat itself, you have to realize that the game is always won on the field. The Colts could either lose this game by over 30 points or pull out an upset and win by 12.
If the defense comes out like they did the past two weeks, Mahomes will eat them alive. He will have a field day and the game would be out of reach by the middle of the third quarter. The Colts need to embrace this opportunity and use it as spark to ignite the fire for the rest of the season. Big players step up when the time comes, setting a standard for others to follow. Who will be that player be this week? Get your popcorn ready.
