The NFL Injury Bug Has Struck Again

Which Week Three injury will have the most significant impact on Week Four? Will the injury bug continue to hit the NFL?

The injury bug in the NFL is a yearly occurrence it is just a matter of when it hits. Week Three in the NFL might be that week after we saw major stars go down with injuries.

Every time I blink it feels like the next week is already beginning and these injuries are definitely going to matter in a few days. That being said, let’s take a look into the big injuries across the NFL after Week Three:

QB Mac Jones, Severe Ankle Sprain

Mac Jones exited the Patriots matchup with Baltimore with an ankle injury. That injury was diagnosed as a severe ankle sprain, officially. Jones’ injury is one that sometimes requires surgery according to a report from Adam Schefter. This is an injury that will have Jones out multiple weeks if not more.

The Patriots visit the Green Bay Packers in Week Four so all eyes turn to Brian Hoyer now. If Hoyer struggles, Bailey Zappe will likely step in and be under center. Jones going down is a tough loss for the Patriots considering he is their starter. With the Bills and Dolphins leading the division, this could be a make-or-break period for the Patriots.

QB Tua Tagovailoa, Ankle And Back

Much like the Patriots, the Dolphins are also in a tricky situation with their QB. Tua has led the Dolphins to an undefeated record so far (3-0). He first left the game with concussion-like symptoms after a big hit. He would return somehow and is now dealing with an ankle and back injury.

It is unclear how severe Tua’s injuries are but barring any setbacks, he should suit up for Thursday’s matchup with the Bengals. Tua is the engine behind this Dolphins team right now and losing him during this hot streak is not good. It should ease Dolphins fans’ minds that he is considered “day-to-day” for now. Keep an eye on this one considering the Dolphins have a quick turnaround to get Tua healthy.

RB Dalvin Cook, Dislocated Shoulder

The Vikings may have won 28-24 in Week Three but they lost their lead back Dalvin Cook. Cook suffered a dislocated shoulder at the end of the third quarter and was out for the remainder of the game. This is not the first shoulder injury for Cook but he bounced back perfectly fine last time.

Cook is luckily considered day-to-day and the Vikings do not think he will miss any time. Keeping Cook in the lineup would be a huge morale boost after losing him to this injury. Alexander Mattison would see a large role if Cook misses a game but keep an eye on this as I think Cook will play with no problems.

RB David Montgomery, Ankle

Montgomery went down after getting rolled up on in the first quarter and missed the remainder of the game. While he was able to walk off on his own power, a trip to the IR has not been ruled out yet. Montgomery’s injury is one of the most common in the NFL and now he might miss some time.

Luckily for the Bears, Khalil Herbert stepped up big time in his absence. Honestly, the Bears should stick with Herbert and get Montgomery healthy. Herbert playing as well as he did showed they can produce without him. Do not be surprised if Montgomery misses time and the Bears stick with Herbert for the foreseeable future.

RB D’Andre Swift, Ankle And Shoulder

Swift had a rather quiet day in Week Three and managed to suffer a sprained shoulder. He also reaggravated his ankle injury suffered in Week Two. The only upside here is that he will not require surgery. Head coach Dan Campbell even said Swift would benefit from taking a couple of weeks off and healing up.

Fellow running back Jamaal Williams has taken on a big role at the goal line now anyway so Swift will benefit from healing up. Obviously, fantasy owners do not want to hear Swift might miss time but he needs to heal. Keep an eye on Swift’s status but for now, expect nothing more than him being out of the lineup.
