Dutch superstar winger Cody Gakpo is one of the hottest prospects in the transfer market, with the 23-year-old wanted by Europe’s biggest and best teams. Manchester United, Tottenham, and even Leeds United have all been linked with a move.
Erling Haaland is undoubtedly one of the most prolific attackers in the world and has taken the premier league by storm, but his form hasn’t been the only one great enough this season as PSV’s Cody Gakpo has proven almost unplayable this season.
Upon the admission of Dutch boss, Erik Ten Hag at United’s helm, the links between Cody Gakpo and Manchester United became greater than ever, and rumors suggest the club will make a move for the inform man in January as they opted for Antony in the recently concluded window.
Bursting onto the scene in 2017-2018, the Dutchman was limited to only one appearance. in the following season, he mustered a goal and five assists in 16 outings for the club, a tally that had continually progressed across the years. In 2022, despite his slow start following the recently concluded transfer saga, he has shown himself to be a force to be reckoned with in front of the goal.
A huge transfer fee would not be required to snap Cody Gakpo away from the Eredivise, as he recently signed a new contract with the Dutch giants a few months ago – a brilliant move organized by the board to avoid his departure for free or for a less significant price compared to the current transfer market inflations.
Cody Gakpo And His Manchester United Transfer Saga
Gakpo, standing at 6’2″, features on the left of the front three in attack and can also feature as a striker. The 2020/21 season proved to be a breakout year for the forward, as he scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in 27 appearances in the Eredivisie. An obvious geometric progression from his previous stats since his debut.
Like other exciting wingers, Gakpo combines pace and trickery to get past the opposition’s challenges. Popularly known for cutting onto the inside before taking a shot or setting his teammate up, the uncertainties left on defenders have helped him flourish.
This season, the 23-year-old goes toe to toe with one of Europe’s finest in Erling Haaland and even has more goal contributions than the Manchester City striker.
Manchester United was priced out of a move for Gakpo after their overpriced payment for Brazilian International Antony. Other suitors including Leeds and Tottenham showed interest but were turned down by the forward.
The PSV Eindhoven 23-year-old winger has netted 13 goals, with ten assists in just 16 games. Gakpo is a different profile to Antony and with Anthony Martial’s persistent injuries, Gakpo can come in at a cheaper price, and also as a different profile to United’s attackers.
Reports have it that Ten Hag still wants to bring Gakpo to United, but a heavy summer of spending will likely rule out a January move for the winger. Manchester United, however, looks set to back their current manager and should be open to that idea.
