Heartbreaking news for the 49ers and cornerback Jason Verrett. The veteran corner who was on track to return from a torn ACL last season has suffered a torn achilles after returning to practice the last few weeks.

49ers CB Jason Verrett

Jason Verrett who signed with the 49ers in 2019 was not physically able to make an impact on the team until 2020 when he had a remarkable season. Verrett has had multiple surgeries and soft tissue injuries throughout his career. Including ACL and achilles tears.

Verrett’s whole NFL story has unfortunately been riddled with injuries and the script has never changed. At this point, it looks unlikely that Verrett will have much of a career in the big leagues due to his continued injury history. At 31 years old, many teams including the 49ers will probably back off from taking a flyer on him. Sad news for a player who has worked so hard every year to be at full strength and constantly had to work his way back from injury.

What Does This Mean For The 49ers?

The 49ers also lost CB Emmanuel Moseley for the season to a torn ACL against the Panthers. It was anticipated that Jason Verrett would be able to take his place upon his return, but now that is off the table. Now there is an opportunity for the youngsters on the depth chart to step up and make an impact as the team looks to make a deep playoff push.

Second-year cornerback Deommodore Lenoir has been filling in as the opposite corner of Charvarius Ward and will likely keep that spot with safety Jimmie Ward moving down into the nickel. The Niners also have rookie CB Samuel Womack, but he seems to have been demoted down to a special teams role for now as he develops.

Ambry Thomas is another depth piece the 49ers have at corner if need be. Thomas stepped into the starting role at the back end of last season when the Niners made their deep playoff run and secured the game-clinching interception against Matthew Stafford to send San Francisco to the playoffs.

Should San Francisco look to bring in another veteran at cornerback or roll with the depth they currently have? You’d think they will now look to bring in somebody else who can produce immediately due to the youth on their depth chart. A veteran presence is likely needed this season if the team looks to make a playoff push.

This news makes it even more important that Arik Armstead can get healthy so the defensive line can be as close to full strength as possible to rush the opposing team’s quarterbacks and provide reinforcement to the secondary. With Charvarius Ward playing at an elite level, look for opposing offenses to pick on whoever ends up playing on the other side. It seems as if whoever plays in that spot will be considered the “weak link” on what is a loaded defense.

The Niners have also been without defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw who has had knee issues for his entire NFL career thus far. With his status being up in the air constantly, the Niners should bring some veterans in to capitalize on a weaker NFC conference.

Did the 49ers not do a good enough job at finding a contingency plan for the cornerback position? If the team looks to bring in some veterans in the secondary, who should they pursue now that the trade deadline has passed?

There is a lot of season left and a good amount of time for John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan to figure out how they wish to proceed. Whatever they decide to do moving forward, this is still just heartbreaking news for Jason Verrett.
