The game’s lone goal scorer, Christian Pulisic, had to leave due to an injury. England trounced Wales to win the group.

England Dominate

After defeating Wales 3-0, England took first place in Group B. Wales was eliminated. Next, the United States needed to defeat Iran, and it did it with a 1-0 victory. On Saturday, the U.S. will play the Netherlands in the round of 16, and on Sunday, England will play Senegal.

Pregame Drama

The match between the United States and Iran on Tuesday night at the World Cup was fraught with intrigue due to the political climate, the high stakes involved, the Iranian team being closely watched for any indication of allegiances to the anti-government protests roiling their country, and a perceived slight by the U.S. Soccer Federation days before the match.

However, there was no tolerance for complexity in the task at hand: defeating Iran was a requirement if the United States wanted to continue competing in the tournament in Qatar. Thus, they acted.

Victory

The 1-0 triumph was a moment of vindication for a U.S. team that has been rebuilt since a spectacular failure to qualify for the most recent World Cup in 2018, even though American star Christian Pulisic was forced from the game at halftime with an abdominal injury sustained as he scored the game’s only goal.

Many believed the Americans’ turn was still four years away, when they would be a little older, a little more experienced, and playing on home territory in North America, even if a new generation of talents had been discovered and developed.

England Cruise To Victory

Even though England was almost guaranteed a spot in the elimination phase before Tuesday’s game, the pressure was still building for their last group meeting. The force to suggest that it was capable of a magnificent, majestic showing in this World Cup after a lackluster performance in its previous game was more pressing than the need to win and, of course, the pressure to avoid losing.

The Welsh dropped back on defense, preferring to repel and deny instead of creating and producing. As a result, the first half of Tuesday’s match mimicked England’s game four days earlier – unpleasant, ineffective, and, more to the point, scoreless. Then, with so many red shirts jam-packed into the area, a superb free-kick arrived, resulting in the first of three goals England so urgently needed.

Captain America Does It Again

In a stressful, must-win contest against Iran, Christian Pulisic sacrificed his body to receive a cross from Sergio Dest, colliding with Iran’s goalie as he finished the first World Cup goal of his career and giving the United States the lead. The result was a 1-0 victory for the United States.

In the first half, the United States outshot Iran 9-0, but they didn’t score until Pulisic produced the game-winning play that a vibrant and expanding home fan base had been waiting for.

Although Pulisic was reportedly brought to the hospital for scans, there was no more information about his injuries made public right away.

From outside the center circle, Weston McKennie lofted a pass to Sergio Dest, standing on the edge of the 6-yard box. As Pulisic sprinted past Ramin Rezaeian and Majid Hosseiniand in the center of the field, Dest headed the ball in front of the goal.

Pulisic smashed the ball for his first World Cup and 22nd overall goal in international competition by turning his body to allow the ball to strike his right foot. Pulisic needed assistance getting to his feet before entering the game again because his momentum took him into a goalie.
