The Seattle Seahawks had a much better record than most experts expected them to during the 2022-23 NFL season. A majority of this unexpected success was because of the stellar play that Geno Smith was able to provide.
Free Agents Lost: Mainly Offensive
They have lost RB Rashaad Penny (Eagles), LB Cody Barton (Commanders), and RB Travis Homer (Bears) this offseason.
Free Agents Gained: Mainly Defensive
However, they have signed C/G Evan Brown from the Lions, DE Dre’Mont Jones of the Denver Broncos, a familiar face in DE Jarran Reed, S Julian Love, formerly of the New York Giants, and LB Devin Bush, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
They signed C/G Evan Brown to replace C Austin Blythe, who retired this off-season.
With the new faces they have brought in, they are serious about improving on the defensive side of the ball.
2023 NFL Draft: Offense, Defense, Or Both?
They could seriously improve their offensive and defensive sides of the ball with the fifth and 20th overall picks in this year’s upcoming draft.
Many theories are about who they should draft and who they could draft. For example, they could address the offense, defense, or both in the first round.
Theory One: Offense
If WR Quentin Johnston (TCU) is available at number five, they would be foolish to pass him up. To be able to pair him up with WR DK Metcalf and WR Tyler Lockett would be a nightmare for opposing defenses.
Johnston is a monster of a human being at WR, coming in at six-foot-four-inches and 215 lbs. He is projected to have a 4.3-4.4 second 40-yard dash, but nothing official is on the books.
Theory Two: Defense
It would also be conceivable for the Seahawks to look to shore up their defensive line with their pick at five.
Jalen Carter Dropping
It looked like Jalen Carter was going to be more or less the obvious top pick for a defensive lineman.
However, after news of him coming out being involved in a car accident that took two people’s lives and being overweight and out of shape for Georgia’s pro day, that is no longer a given.
Bryan Bresee (Clemson) Or Calijah Kancey (Pittsburgh)
There is a good chance they could choose to go with Bryan Bresee of Clemson or Calijah Kancey of Pittsburgh.
I believe that Calijah Kancey is the better of those two options. He is a force of nature at six foot one inch tall and over 280 lbs. He ran a 4.67-second 40-yard dash and seven sacks each of his past two seasons at Pittsburgh.
