2025 will be a huge year for the New York Giants. General Manager Joe Schoen, and head coach Brian Daboll are on thin ice with the organization, and they need to build something quick. The Giants have several players set to his free agency, but they have a ton of gaps to fill now.
New York could lose players like Darius Slayton, Jason Pinnock, and Azeez Ojulari this year. Who should they pursue to fill these holes, and who should they find for the existing spaces already?
1. Justin Fields, QB Pittsburgh Steelers
![Justin Fields could be a great pickup for the Giants in free agency.](https://www.stadiumrant.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/2173035050.0-1024x683.jpg)
First things first here, the Giants need a quarterback. While it’s a near certainty that they draft a QB, depth is paramount. 2024 saw the Giants start Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, and even Tim Boyle. 2025 cannot be a repeat of this past failure.
Sam Darnold will likely re-sign with the Minnesota Vikings this year, while Russell Wilson seems to have the Steelers’ job locked up. Justin Fields is still a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL.
In Fields’ six starts last season, the Steelers went 4-2. His completion percentage was 65.8, along with 1,106 passing yards and a 5-1 TD-INT ratio. Fields is a low-cost, high-reward option. No matter what the Giants do in the draft, signing Justin Fields can’t do any more damage to a broken offense.
2. Chris Godwin, WR Tampa Bay Buccaneers
![Chris Godwin is a terrific veteran presence for New York's young locker room.](https://www.stadiumrant.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/2180125578.0-1024x683.jpg)
Chris Godwin has over 7,000 career receiving yards and four 1,000-yard seasons under his belt. Godwin, while a key player in Tampa’s offense, was always number two to Mike Evans. While he and Evans make a great duo, it seems that their time together is coming to an end.
Godwin dislocated his ankle in Week Seven of the 2024 season and hasn’t seen the field since. The Giants are expected to lose veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton to free agency, and Chris Godwin is the perfect replacement.
Chris Godwin will be 29 years old at the start of the 2025 NFL season. He’s got the bonafides, but his age, and the recent injury, make him a fairly affordable steal for a new team.
The Giants have a superstar receiver in Malik Nabers, but their offense lacks a veteran presence. Chris Godwin could fill that space without New York having to break the bank. He could also be a tremendous help for a rookie QB if the Giants go that route in April.
3. & 4. CB Charvarius Ward & S Talanoa Hufanga, San Francisco 49ers
![Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga are both set to hit free agency in 2025.](https://www.stadiumrant.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Untitled-design-19-1024x683.jpg)
Defense! Defense! Defense! The New York Giants defense is in the midst of a major overhaul. While it’s unlikely the Giants can land both of these 49ers defenders, they need to shoot high.
Charvarius Ward played a large role in the Niners’ Super Bowl push in 2023, while Talanoa Hufanga showed some real promise early in his career. Ward’s production has taken a decline over the last year, but it’s unclear if that falls on him or the Niners’ overall struggles.
Hufanga hasn’t played a full season since his second year. That year, he was a first-team All-Pro. The Giants’ secondary was abysmal in 2024, and the Niners’ duo are hungry free-agent veterans with something to prove. If New York can land one or both of these guys, it could improve an extremely weak area in 2025.
5. Osa Odighizuwa, DL Dallas Cowboys
![Osa Odighizuwa would be a huge upgrade to the Giants' defensive front.](https://www.stadiumrant.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/2186720788.0-1024x683.jpg)
The Giants’ offensive needs should be relatively low-cost. The defense is where they will likely spend their money. Osa Odighizuwa is a defensive player that might be worth the money.
Odighizuwa has been consistent for the Cowboys, starting every game for the last three seasons. He had 47 total tackles, 25 of which were solo. He hit the QB 23 times and pressured them 60 times. He’s someone who flies under the radar, but offenses need to plan for.
The Giants’ pass rush did not live up to expectations last season. Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Thibodeaux both dealt with injuries, while Brian Burns was still growing with his new team. Lawrence is a game-wrecker when healthy. If he could be paired up with a guy like Odighizuwa, they would terrorize opposing QBs.
End Of My Giants Rant
The Giants have a make-or-break offseason coming up. While it’s unlikely they will land everyone on this list, this is Joe Schoen’s last chance to build a legitimate team. He needs to shoot for the stars.
