Well, Jets fans, this whole season has been an absolute mess. Not only will this go down as one of the biggest disappointing seasons in franchise history, but there will be yet another season of no playoffs.
It’s been 14 years since the New York Jets last made the playoffs and it is one of the long list of reasons why the New York Jets are the most dysfunctional franchise in this league and it’s not even close. There are so many reasons why they didn’t make the playoffs, but here are the top three in my opinion.
1. The Decline Of Aaron Rodgers
Look I want to start by saying, that Aaron Rodgers was one of my favorite QBs when he played with the Packers. He is not the tremendous reason why the Jets lost those games as four of them can be blamed for the kicker mismanagement (Thanks Joe Douglas). However, he is a problem as he has shown a ton of regression this year. His throws have been very lackluster and it’s clear he is playing hurt this season. Not only is he limping almost every game, but you can see the guy wince in both pain and frustration.
It’s clear that he has not had strong chemistry with his receivers and even when the Jets acquired Davante Adams via trade, Rodgers still struggled. With him being 41 years old and past his prime, it’s clear he is not going to return to his Packers form. With how the owner acted this year (OH We’ll Get To That) and the Jets getting a new staff, there is a real chance Rodgers will part ways with the team due to how much he declined. Who knows what happens, but with one year left on his deal, it’s going to be a chaotic time for both the Jets and Rodgers.
2. Should Have Fired Robert Saleh Last Season
You know, it’s frustrating to hear so many on social media claim that Saleh wasn’t the problem and he shouldn’t have been fired, along with the Jets owing him an apology. First of all, yes, it was a mistake that Saleh was fired midseason, however, he was a problem. This is not the NBA, coaching matters in the NFL. Saleh was a horrendous coach and should have been fired last season.
The awful coaching decisions mid-game, failure to discipline his team, the bizarre time management, poor management of culture especially in that Mike White Game, etc. Saleh should have been gone last season and he was easily the worst head coach in the NFL not named Dennis Allen formerly of the Saints. Saleh should have been fired last season and keeping him to coach this year was a terrible decision. Saleh is a good defensive coordinator, but he’s just not a head coach.
3. The Owner
The main reason why this team is dysfunctional and why they missed the playoffs is because of one man, Woody Johnson. This man is the worst owner in the NFL and it is not even close. He is also the definition of an owner who is meddling and has no idea how to run the team. The worst part is he has owned this team since January of 2000 and the franchise is getting deeper in low points. This year proved how incompetent he is and I will provide a bullet point list of actions he either did or forced to happen.
- Rejected a Trade to send Allen Lazard And A Draft Pick To Cleveland For Jerry Jeudy
- Banning Joe Douglas From Extending Bryce Huff or Any Player On the Roster
- Meddling In The Haason Reddick Holdout
- Forcing The Jets Coaching Staff To Bench S Tony Adams
- Demanding Douglas Acquire WR Davante Adams Via Trade By Any Means Possible
- Wanting To Bench Aaron Rodgers in Week 5 Against The Broncos
- Firing Robert Saleh Without Consulting Anyone In The Organization
These are things that are known and reported in public. The Culture of Fear and dysfunction is just all over this franchise. It’s no surprise that Joe Douglas was relieved and happier than ever when he got fired. I don’t blame him at all for feeling that way and while he was a very bad GM including his awful drafting.
This season just continues to prove that it doesn’t matter who the coach or the GM of the franchise is with this team. It’s the wrong owner that is the problem. I have long not been a fan of Woody, but after this season it’s clear this team will never win with this guy as the owner. After all, Woody cares more about trying to secure his government job and what this team wears every week, than fixing the Jets organization. Woody, just sell the team, because you stink as an owner.
On The Bright Side – Will McDonald Finally Proved Why He Was A 1st Round Pick
There is no bright side to this team in the present and the future. If I had to choose one I have to go with Will McDonald. When the Jets drafted him I was not a fan of the pick and McDonald sucked in his rookie season. Well, this season was a lot better as McDonald improved as a pass rusher recording 10 sacks this season which is the most for a player on this defense.
McDonald’s even forced two fumbles this year as well, which is a strong positive. I hated the pick and at one point called the pick a waste of a first. Who knew one year later he would be one of the bright spots on the Jet’s defense? Well done Will McDonald and hopefully he continues his development and gets a competent coaching staff.
