Once permanent features at the peak of the T20 list, star hitters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have seen a marked drop in the latest rankings. The most recent ICC T20 player rankings bode poorly for fans of Pakistani cricket. Their drop results from a series of lackluster shows that have questioned their condition in preparation for important international matches ahead.
Australia’s Travis Head maintains his number one T20 batsman. India’s Abhishek Sharma rises to second after a sensational 37-ball century against England. Meanwhile, Azam has slipped to seventh and Rizwan to ninth, marking a significant change in the T20 batting group.
Subpar Performances From Babar Azam And Mohammad Rizwan

The great change in these rankings was caused by Pakistan‘s most recent T20 series against Australia. In great part because of erratic batting performances, the Green Shirts suffered a 3-0 whitewash. Babar Azam’s average of 15.66 with a strike rate of 142.42 across three games is far from his typical consistency; he only scored 47 runs. Mohammad Rizwan fared even more poorly with a sorry strike rate of 57.14 and managed just 16 runs in two innings.
These performances let fans down, which directly affected their ICC ratings. Rizwan is in ninth place now, and Babar has slipped to seventh; each player dropped one position. The absence of other Pakistani batters in the top 50 highlights the team’s growing struggles in the shortest format.
Rest Of The Players
Other players advance notably, even as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan flounder. Following a brilliant series against South Africa, in which he hit two unbeaten centuries, India’s Tilak Varma raced 69 spots up to third place in the ranking. His teammate Sanju Samson also moved 17 spots to 22nd thanks to steady play.
West Indies’ Akeal Hosein restored the top ranking in the bowling department, displacing Adil Rashid of England as second. Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi of India also saw significant improvement. No Pakistani bowler appears among the top ten, though, indicating a more general problem above and above the batting lineup only. Once a trustworthy character, even Shaheen Shah Afridi has significantly plummeted in the ratings.
End Of Rant
Pakistan cricket should take note of the plummet in ratings for Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Having major events on the horizon, including the ICC Champions Trophy and the upcoming tri-series, the team has to deal with these performance gaps quickly. Although individual slumps are typical in cricket, the overall decline in Pakistan’s T20 performance points to more serious problems that must urgently be addressed.
