New Zealand fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. This is a serious setback to the Kiwi plans. Medical evaluations following a training session in Karachi revealed a small tear in the 25-year-old pacemaker’s left hamstring, which was causing him some pain.
Given a mandatory rehabilitation period of at least two weeks, Sears would have been only probable for New Zealand’s final group-stage game against India on March 2. Considering the tournament’s brief length, the Black Caps chose to sub him out for Jacob Duffy.
Ben Sears Has A Back Setback

Also, as part of New Zealand’s tri-series squad in Pakistan, Ben Sears failed to make a difference in the league stage matches, conceding 104 runs in 16 overs and not getting any wickets. Given previous health worries, his injury marks yet more career disappointment.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over the development, acknowledging Sears’ potential and the frustration of missing his first major ICC tournament. Stead mentioned that we all sincerely empathize with Sears. Being excluded from a major event, especially late, is always difficult.
The circumstances of Sears’ injury required team management to react quickly. Since the tournament system did not provide much scope for late returns, a substitute had to be found. Consequently, the selectors made a like-for-like change by adding Jacob Duffy.
Jacob Duffy As Replacement In New Zealand Squad
Since his 2022 debut, experienced home performer Jacob Duffy has played 10 One-Day Internationals for New Zealand and taken 18 wickets. He most recently took four wickets in two games during the home series against Sri Lanka.
Though this will be Jacob Duffy’s first ICC event, his knowledge of the present squad and Pakistan’s playing conditions will aid him in adapting smoothly. His addition gives the Blackcaps’ fast bowling much-needed support with their Champions Trophy starting against the home team on February 19.
End Of Rant
Though New Zealand will have to adapt to Ben Sears’ absence quickly, they still have a well-rounded bowling squad, thanks to Jacob Duffy filling in for him. The Black Caps will need adaptability since the Champions Trophy is brief and intense. Though Sears would be sorry to miss out on something, he will be eager to get back in shape for the next series.
