Lamont Butler was crucial, finding teammates and hitting key shots. Kentucky needed its warrior on Saturday, and he delivered.

Rivalry Gets Heated Late

Louisville Basketball, Kentucky Basketball

It’s not a rivalry without at least some kind of fireworks, right? In the intense matchup between Kentucky and Louisville, with 5:18 remaining, Reyne Smith from Louisville went for an offensive rebound when Wildcats forward Brandon Garrison made contact with him.

The incident occurred near the Louisville bench, leading both teams, including players and coaches, to gather around. Fortunately, there were no ejections, and Garrison was given a foul. After a brief pause, both teams resumed play.

Kentucky head coach Mark Pope got into the exchange and so did Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey, helping to settle things down during what was an intense and chippy game in their first ever Bluegrass rivalry.

Otega Oweh To the Rescue Late

Otega Oweh Kentucky Basketball

When Kentucky needed a basket late, Otega Oweh was there. He made a dunk, a three in the corner, and some key stops down the stretch. He finished with 17 points, to go along with his 7 of 11 shooting.

Otega Oweh has solidified his place on the Kentucky team, making significant contributions in crucial moments. His key rebound in the Duke game helped secure the win, and he also made vital free throws and big shots during the Louisville game. For Kentucky to achieve its goals this season, both Oweh and Lamont Butler need to lead the team, and they showcased their abilities in tonight’s game. Their transfer additions this past summer have proved to be essential for Mark Pope and his coaching staff.

Moving Forward

As Kentucky moves forward toward Christmas and beyond into SEC play, the road gets tougher. The SEC this season is one of the best conferences in college basketball. Kentucky’s shooting will have to improve—they need to replicate their performance tonight—while also overcoming slow starts and letting teams hang around, as Louisville did today. If Louisville had been at full strength, this game would have been much closer than the final score indicates. Despite only having seven players, Louisville almost pulled off the upset in Rupp Arena.

Kentucky will go as far as Lamont Butler and Otega Oweh take them. Additionally, Koby Brea needs to consistently hit shots, along with Jaxson Robinson, who performed well today. The Wildcats have the potential to be a strong team and create an impact in SEC play, but to truly succeed, they must focus on playing two full halves and delivering a complete performance.

Performances like today are a good sign for Kentucky moving forward. They finish out the December schedule with games against Ohio State and Brown before entering league play right out of the gate against Florida at home.

This is a fun team! The unselfishness of this group is by far one of its best qualities as they continue to develop. While Kentucky’s defense left a lot to be desired today, a win is a win in a rivalry game, especially when it’s against Louisville. There was great fight shown by the Cats. If they keep improving and getting better, Kentucky can certainly be one of the teams to watch as they head into SEC play and tournament season.
