The New York Mets first baseman, Pete Alonso, turned down a seven-year, $158 million contract extension. He also turned down a three-year, $90M, and a three-year, $70M extensions.

The Mets offered Alonso a long-term deal last offseason. He declined, and bet on himself to achieve a higher market value deal.

Pete’s Statistics And His Production On The Mets

Pete Alonso has three seasons with at least 40 home runs. He is the only Mets player to do so more than once.

Since he entered the league in 2019, Alonso has had the most RBIs in the league, with 586. He also had the second most home runs, to Yankees center fielder Aaron Judge, with 226 to 232.

Alonso has the third-lowest batting average since the start of the 2023 season among 23 qualified first basemen. He has been regressing over the past three seasons.

He is a low-OBP designated hitter, with a 121 wRC+ over the last two seasons. There are a lot of downsides to a deal over three years.

End Of My Pete Alonso And The Mets Rant

The Mets are looking to do what they have failed to do countless times, and what they believe is right for the team, not for individual players. Alonso is not getting a better offer than what he has received from the Mets because no team values him more than the Mets do.

It has been shown time and time again in his current market. The Mets are not responsible if Pete Alonso cannot reach a deal with them. Baseball is a business that requires business acumen. Furthermore, the Mets have already given him two to three chances. Maybe he should have played better in 2024 to earn more in free agency. The franchise’s future cannot be influenced by a clutch HR in a Wild Card game.
