Big news has broken in the NBA world: The 2024 All-Star game will have a brand-new format.
New NBA All-Star Format
The selected All-Stars will be divided into three teams of eight players, and the fourth team will be the winning team of the ‘Rising Stars’ challenge.
Adam Silver’s new format aims to make the All-Star game more competitive. The four teams will compete in a semi-final series of games to 40 points, where the winners will advance to the finals, first to 25 points. How the matchups will be decided has not yet been announced, but we’ll most likely hear soon.
The idea has sparked controversy and mixed opinions throughout the fandom. But the bottom line is that people have been unhappy with the game for a long time. Fans have begged to see some real competitive drive out of the players, but they have had little motivation in previous years. Silver has implemented this new format to see if it will bring that edge out, as players compete for a spot in a ‘final’.
Whether the idea pans out or not, it is a stroke of genius by the commissioner. It will certainly draw a lot of interest, something that’s been missing as of late in the All-Star game. The shortened games mean that buckets are more valuable right from the start, and the hope is it will get the players playing hard.
