The NFL Conference Championship games have come and gone, and Super Bowl LIX is set. The Kansas City Chiefs will look to make history in a rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles. While the 2024 NFL season saw plenty of surprises, this case of deja vu should’ve been expected.
The Chiefs Are Still The Chiefs
Call it devil magic, call it luck, but at the end of the day, the Kansas City Chiefs are a dynasty. Kansas City won 15 games in 2024, a franchise record, and they’re on the cusp of the NFL’s first-ever three-peat. For the seventh consecutive year, Patrick Mahomes won the conference championship. He’s also set to make his fifth Super Bowl appearance in that span.
The 2024 season saw the Chiefs fail to surpass 30 points in a single game. They looked as vulnerable as ever, but by hook or crook, they found a way to win. The NFL Playoffs are what matters though, and KC has been lights out in the postseason. They earned a first-round bye week, then took down the Houston Texans and the Buffalo Bills.
The Kansas City Chiefs run the NFL, and that’s just reality. Over the last three seasons, KC has a combined record of 49-11, playoffs included. Patrick Mahomes is chasing Tom Brady’s legacy, and he’s in pursuit of a fourth ring at just 29 years old. Andy Reid is quickly becoming a top-five all-time NFL head coach as well. The Chiefs were Super Bowl favorites six months ago, it’s no surprise they’re here now.
The Eagles’ Rocky Path To Redemption
It has been a whirlwind 24 months for the Philadelphia Eagles. At this time two years ago, they were set to meet the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. They followed that up with a 10-1 start to the 2023 season, only to see a 1-6 collapse and a first-round elimination. Rumors swirled of drama in the locker room, faith lost in head coach Nick Sirianni, and a 2-2 start to the 2024 season.
Since the Eagles’ Week Five bye, they’ve gone 15-1 on their path back to the Super Bowl. The offseason addition of Saquon Barkley has turned their offense into a buzzsaw. The 27-year-old has over 2,300 rushing yards through the playoffs. He’s opened up Philly’s offense in a terrifying way, to the point that they tallied 55 points on the Commanders in the championship round.
This version of the Philadelphia Eagles feels different, compared to their 2023 counterpart. They have an inhuman running back, a defense that leads the NFL in forced fumbles, and a massive chip on their shoulder. The Eagles are a nightmare for opposing teams, and the Chiefs might have a hard time sleeping before Super Bowl LIX.
End Of My Super Bowl Rant
The Chiefs vs. the Eagles feels like a rematch that was destined to happen. Kansas City is chasing history, while Philly has revenge on its mind. It might not be what was predicted in August, but it will be a game to remember.
