Former Green Bay Packers and current Buffalo Bills safety Micah Hyde has announced his retirement from the NFL after 12 seasons. The former two-time All-Pro was one of the top safeties in the league during his career, spending four years in Green Bay and eight years in Buffalo.
Micah Hyde Was A Steal Of The Draft
Micah Hyde fell all the way to the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Selected by the Packers with the 159th pick, Hyde started his career focusing on special teams while being buried on the depth chart. He turned heads after his 93-yard punt return touchdown during his rookie season. Towards the end of the season, he became a full-time starter. After switching from strong to free safety, Hyde started to find more success in the Packers’ secondary.
He recorded his first career interception in Week 10 of the 2014 season and added another one later in the year. The former Iowa Hockeye also returned two punts for touchdowns. After recording back-to-back seasons with three interceptions, Hyde finally got his first postseason interception during the 2016 NFL Divisional Round against the Dallas Cowboys.
Finding A New Home In Bills Mafia
With free agency looming, the Packers did not offer Hyde a contract extension. The 25-year-old at the time found a new home, signing a luxurious five-year contract with the Buffalo Bills. He and opposite starting safety Jordan Poyer would become a fan-favorite duo in Orchard Park, being highly graded by Pro Football Focus. After recording a career-high five interceptions, Hyde was named to his first career Pro Bowl and selected second-team All-Pro.
Hyde would continue to find success in Buffalo, keeping up his high-level play at safety while returning kicks. In 2021, he would earn his second All-Pro nod after intercepting five passes, including his first-career pick-six. Unfortunately, Hyde would suffer a neck injury that kept him out nearly the entire 2022 season, and he also missed three more games in 2023. After contemplating retirement, he joined the Bills during their 2025 postseason run but was inactive for any games.
