Bernardo Silva had a lot to say about Manchester City’s chances in the title race and he wasn’t hopeful.
Manchester City’s struggles have been the biggest shock of this Premier League season so far. Pep Guardiola’s side has been suffering from one terrible result after another. Now, it is clear that any talks about the title race are wishful thinking. Sitting sixth in the league, Manchester City has a lot of fixing to do. Bernardo Silva acknowledged that.
The Portugal international had a lot to say about Manchester City’s chances of defending their Premier League title. He had some hopes, but he still admitted how difficult the team’s situation is.
“I would say [winning the Premier League title is] not impossible because in football there are no impossibles, but right now, Man City are completely out of the title race. There’s no question about that. It’s too late for us,” Silva stated in a recent talk with Sky Sports.
“People always say that you don’t win a league until January but you can lose it, and this season the reality is we’ve lost it,” he continued.
The future might not be that bright for Manchester City’s side, but the team could start turning things around. Guardiola’s side managed to win their last two matches against Leicester City and West Ham. This may not be much for City’s fans, but it is a start.
These two wins will help Manchester City’s players get their confidence back. If the team managed to keep winning from now on, their former glory might return; even if only a little bit of it. In recent weeks, everyone noticed how the team didn’t look like winners. Now, Guardiola has to get his players back in shape.
As the media speculate on whether Manchester City has a chance in the title race, Silva wants to focus on improving the team’s position in the league. He believes that this is more important than focusing on the teams at the top of the league, such as Liverpool.
“Right now it’s about accepting the reality. I’m not looking at Liverpool, we’re sixth or seventh in the league. I cannot be looking at Liverpool or Arsenal or whatever. I’m looking right now at the next game, try and win three points to be fifth, to be fourth and to be third,” Silva said.
If Manchester City managed to improve their position, then Silva would want to think about more than simply coming in third. “And then ten games from the end of the season you can start making a little bit of math to see where you can go,” he continued.
Manchester City has a lot to improve. Their last two wins could help them regain some momentum, but it’s just the start. The team still needs to improve their position in the Champions League. Right now, Manchester City is sitting 22nd in the group stage standings. This has to change if they want to steer away from elimination’s path. Silva’s words are honest, but he still acknowledged that they can turn things around. Fans will have to wait and see whether this will happen or not.
