The Chicago Bears historically have not picked the right coach. Trestman, Nagy, Fox and now Eberflus. All coaches who weren’t coveted by the league. They all had mediocre or awful records. Here’s how the Bears will mess up this time.

Chicago Bears Head Coaching History

Marc Trestman coached the Bears in 2013 and 14. In 2013, Trestman led the Bears to an 8-8 respectable record. However, 2014 things fell apart as they lost their last six games and finished 5-11. After only two seasons as the Bears coach, Trestman was let go. This was the right decision, as they needed a change in the locker room.

Following Trestman was John Fox, who was the former Broncos coach, he compiled a 14-34 record over three seasons which is honestly hard to do. That computes to a dismal .291 winning percentage. In his first season as head coach, Fox led the team to a 6-10 record. It got so bad that the Bears, in their third game of that season, punted on all ten possessions, in a 26-0 loss to Seattle.

Chicago Bears, John Fox

The following year the Bears finished even worse (3-13). After a 1-3 start the next year, in came Mitchell Trubisky, who finished 5-11 on the season. Fox was fired after the season ended, and didn’t have much of anything to hang his hat on as a Bears coach.

After Fox was fired, in marched Matt Nagy, who brought the culture that they needed. He started “Club Dub, ” a dance party in the locker room after each win. Nagy was a decent coach, and led the Bears to the playoffs in 2018. They lost to the Eagles in the playoffs on the infamous double doink. He led the Bears to their first NFC North title since 2010.

Nagy helped lead the team to 20 wins in his first two seasons as head coach, which was a welcome sight for them. Then the offense began to struggle and Nagy gave up play-calling duties. They ranked near the bottom of the league in points per game and yards per play in 2020. After a similar result the following season, Nagy was fired. Then came Matt Eberflus from the Colts. He had so many disastrous mistakes this year. From the timeout not called, to getting into field goal range but going for it on fourth down.

Eberflus has certainly been the worst Bears coach in recent memory. have seen as a Bears fan certainly. He was a good defensive coach but the offense was awful. It’s hard to imagine the Bears doing worse then him, but anything is possible. I can easily see them making the wrong decision and to say, I think they will.

Incompetent Leadership will be to Blame

They will find a way to mess this up, as they have in the past. It is squarely on the team’s leaders, president, Kevin Warren, General Manager Ryan Poles, and Chairman George McCaskey to make this decision. It would be genuinely suprising if they made the right decision here and got Ben Johnson. It will be intriguing to see what this organization does. They need to have a coach who can help Caleb Williams develop.

Ben Johnson, Offensive Coordinator for the Lions, is the top name. The Bears have been tied to Pete Carroll and a few other candidates. They are doing an exhaustive search for the “right guy”. Fans will find out soon enough if they have found him or not.
