Dick Vitale was set to return to college basketball next weekend for his first game in the booth in two years, but his return has been delayed, according to Vitale.
Dick Vitale Setback
It’s been two years since Vitale put on the headsets to call college basketball games, and according to Vitale, he will have a setback in his return for just a bit longer.
Vitale’s full statement:
“I’m sorry to have to share the disappointing news that I won’t be able to call the Duke-Wake Forest game next weekend. Unrelated to any of my cancer scares, I had an accident at my home in Florida, and that has created some new health challenges and near-term physical limitations for me. I’m devastated that I won’t be courtside with my ESPN buddy Dave O’Brien and with all the players and fans, especially because of the overwhelming response I received when news of my planned return was announced. I was anxiously awaiting the chance to feel the excitement and energy of a college basketball environment for the first time in nearly two years.
“Now, I’m just going to have to wait some more. I’m not sure exactly when that will be, yet l’m expected to make a full recovery and will provide updates when I have more information. Despite this latest setback, I feel blessed to have the support of my family, friends, and ESPN teammates. I’m a lucky guy and as l’ve said before, I will continue to do whatever it takes to get back to calling the sport I love. In the meantime, I have to say ‘Go Irish’ on Monday night! Love to all.”
Vitale has faced many challenges in his life over the last two years, but I expect him to keep fighting and working his way back into the college basketball world. His perseverance in battling cancer, and his determination to return to the sport he loves, demonstrate the passion and dedication he has for the game. Whatever this setback may be, I’m confident that Vitale will work hard to overcome it.
End Of My Dick Vitale Rant
As we look forward to seeing Dick Vitale return to the game, let’s all keep in mind the struggles he’s had with cancer treatments, surgeries, radiations, and all the things that have limited his ability since being diagnosed. We all want Vitale to return to the game, but we must remember he said limitations would happen and it would be a slow process to get back.
He underwent surgery in the summer of 2024 when he found out from a biopsy that a lymph node in his neck showed cancer.
We all love Dicky V, and we all wish him the best in his recovery as he battles these limitations and struggles in his journey with cancer. As for the fan in myself, I was hoping we could see Vitale next weekend and hear his catchphrases and emotional story from him, but it’ll have to wait for another time or when Vitale can return and get better and healthy.
No other figure in sports is a bigger ambassador for college basketball than Vitale. His influence trickles down to fans, coaches, and players, reflecting his deep love and passion for the game and those who cherish him. Growing up, I had a special admiration for Vitale because he was not just a commentator; he was the vibrant voice that brought the game to life for so many.
We are all sending our prayers for you, Dick. Wishing you a healthy recovery and all the best during this time.
