After stepping down from the Seahawks’ Head Coaching job in 2023, Pete Carroll will return to the NFL sidelines for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Famed former Seattle, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and USC Trojans head coach Pete Carroll has reportedly agreed to take the Las Vegas Raiders’ job. The 73-year-old allegedly signed a three-year deal and an option for a fourth.
Carroll, who stepped away from the Seahawks job in 2023, was thought to be done with coaching. However, he’s chosen to take on the task of rebuilding the Raiders (4-13). He replaced Antonio Pierce, who coached the team for part of the 2023 season and all of 2024, compiling a record of 9-17 and a .346 winning percentage.
Raiders New Coach Is Already A Legend
Carroll’s coaching resume was already Hall of Fame-worthy before accepting the Las Vegas job. While he had unsuccessful stints in New England and with the Jets early in his career, he would have a legendary run as the USC Trojans Head Coach. He led the school to an NCAA title in 2004, with vaunted college stars like Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart. During his nine years with the Trojans, he posted a 91-19 record and won four Rose Bowls.
Then, it was back to the NFL, where he would coach the team he’s most associated with – the Seattle Seahawks. From 2010-2023, he served as the franchise’s Head Coach and President of Football Operations. Essentially, Carroll was the franchise, acting as its leader and architect. Caroll built a perennial contender, capturing the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Seahawks would return to the Big Game once again but lost to New England in Super Bowl XLIX.
Pete Carroll Makes History By Joining The Raiders

Win or lose, Pete Carroll’s stint with the Raiders has already made history. He will join Bill Parcells and Marty Schottenheimer as the only coaches who have led four NFL franchises in their careers. Carroll is only the third head coach to win an NCCA National title and a Super Bowl. Jimmy Johnson (University of Miami, Dallas Cowboys) and Barry Switzer (University of Oklahoma, Dallas Cowboys) are the other two.
End Of My Raiders Rant
Because of that long list of achievements, many believe that Carroll will provide stability for the Raiders as he did in Seattle. While he won’t possess as much power over personnel decisions, what he brings to the team on the sidelines and the locker room will matter. The franchise hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2002 AFC Championship Game.
Carroll became the oldest head coach in the league and the 24th man in Raiders franchise history to hold the job. Carroll accepting the position in Las Vegas leaves the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints as the last available NFL head coaching jobs this offseason.
