Paris Saint Germain (PSG) goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was the victim of a very horrifying incident where he was cleated in the face by Monaco’s Wilfred Singo. The incident occurred in a top-of-the-table clash with AS Monaco in Ligue 1.
The Italian goalkeeper suffered a horrific blow to the face around the 13th-minute mark as he came off his line to stop Wilfred Singo, who was through on goal. To stop Singo from attempting a shot on goal, he rushed towards the right back in a heroic attempt to save the goal.
Heroics Of Gianluigi Donnarumma Come At a Cost
Gianluigi Donnarumma was accidentally booted right in the face by Wilfred Singo in his box. The 25-year-old goalkeeper had gruesome injuries to his right cheekbone, with deep cuts and bleeding straight away.
Donnarumma was stunned by the horrific challenge, and for a moment, it looked like he had passed out. He immediately received medical attention on the pitch and was replaced in the 20th minute with Matvey Sofanov. The star goalkeeper had his cheekbone almost massacred as Singo’s cleats planted on his face. Luckily, the Italian had his eyes closed during contact, or else it could’ve been much worse.
PSG Turn Pain Into Power
The Paris Saint Germain (PSG) players were rattled by the horrific injury their first-choice goalkeeper suffered so early in the game, but they managed to turn the incident into power. PSG broke the deadlock with 19-year-old Desire Doue, who scored after Achraf Hakimi’s assist.
Monaco showed resilience and fought back, with Salim Ben Seghir converting a penalty just a few minutes after the break. However, PSG remained dominant till the final whistle and eventually won 4-2, but they were certainly made to work for it. It was a game with everything a fan would wish for. Still, not even the Monaco fans would want such an incident to happen, even for a Parisian to experience what Gianluigi Donnarumma did.
End Of Rant
The Ligue 1 Champions will face Lens in the French Cup fixture on Sunday before the winter break. This will be PSG’s last game in 2024, probably without their first-choice goalkeeper, who is in recovery and has stated on social media that he feels well despite the stitches on his cheek. The Italian will have plenty of time to recover and return before PSG’s final against AS Monaco again in the Trophee des Champions on January 5th.
