Iga Swiatek is safely through her first match of the 2025 Australian Open against Katerina Siniakova, 6-3, 6-4, in one hour and 23 minutes. The Polish star, currently ranked No. 2, gave her competitors a taste of her prowess as she advanced to the second round, where she will play Rebecca Sramkova.
It is a positive start for Swiatek, who is eyeing her maiden Australian Open crown. In the match, she showed determination, especially when she had to endure difficult moments to overcome the tough opponent.
The Journey To The Australian Open Of Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek returned to the Australian Open following a great but grueling beginning to the 2025 season. Earlier, she guided Team Poland to the final of the United Cup, where she got key victories over top players such as Elena Rybakina and Karolina Muchova. While Poland lost the final match to Team USA, Swiatek’s run encouraged more of the same in the year that was to follow.
After clearing a doping controversy, this tournament is her first grand slam event. After the previous suspension in September for a positive test result for trimetazidine, which was ingested through contaminated melatonin tablets, Swiatek got back to her court with her character unblemished. Her case included openness for herself and tenacity in trying to combat whatever was put in front of her.
Match Review With Katerina Siniakova

The first set against Katerina Siniakova, a nine-time Grand Slam winner in doubles, was a fierce battle. While Siniakova was just No. 50 in the world in singles rankings, she was a tough contender for Swiatek, who played quite aggressively.
The first set started with both players winning their service games in picturesque tiebreak sets. Swiatek was the first to get a break to go to 4-2, but the confidence and a powerful backhand saw Siniakova come back and level both the set and the match. But in the end, the powerful groundstrokes of Swiatek and her steady returns were enough for her to take the set 6-3.
In the second set, Swiatek, as usual, seemed to take the lead as she broke her opponent early to go ahead 2-0. Siniakova leveled with three straight games to secure the set, now at 3-2. But Swiatek returned, as she is, to take the match again and applied pressure on Siniakova, making her miss the lines to go up and get the set and the match.
Statistical Edge
Iga Swiatek’s composure was echoed by the statistics she recorded during the match. Despite logging 19 winners to Swiatek’s 17, Katerina Siniakova also made more unforced errors than Swiatek, 23. The Pole was much more focused and only made 15 unforced errors compared to Halep’s 24.
Also, Swiatek brought a nice return game to the party—50% of return points in the first set were won. Moving on, she added some extraordinary moments on the court as a player who preferred high-style pressure moments and flexibility.
Next Steps
Sramkova will face Iga Swiatek in the second round. She has never played this girl, though she has had two matches against youngsters ranked 100 and 92. Seeded 49th, Sramkova moved through when she beat Volynets in straight sets.
This is the first time Swiatek will face Sramkova, which makes the match even more interesting. While Swiatek hopes to achieve four successive good results, her excellent baseline play and nerves will prove important against Sramkova.
End of Rant
The second seed from Poland, Iga Swiatek, cannot be discounted as a possible finalist in Melbourne, who skillfully won her first match. To beat such a skilled player as Siniakova in two sets showed the readiness and desire of the Romanian. As a result, it is necessary to acknowledge that Swiatek’s progress toward the title she wants in Melbourne is inspiring, and it is amazing to see her develop in the upcoming tournament.
