Lionel Messi hinted at the World Cup 2026 after Inter Miami started their 2025 season with a win over Mexican club Club America. The Argentine is still excited and enthusiastic despite being in the twilight of his illustrious football career.

Messi was on the scoresheet in the 2-2 draw against Club America. Miami had to go through a penalty shootout to win their first friendly match of 2025, scoring 3-2 from the spot. However, the exciting part for Messi and Argentine fans is what the 37-year-old said after the match regarding his indulgence in the World Cup next year.

“I’m Very Excited”, Says Lionel Messi

TN reports what the World Cup winner said after the game. He stated:

“We have been doing preseason, we have a few training sessions. So it helps us to continue growing with a new coach and to continue improving.”

Despite sitting right on the football throne, Lionel Messi still feels excited and wants to prepare well for the upcoming year. The reporter asked if he would feature in the World Cup 2026 next year, to which the Argentine replied:

“I’m just starting the year, I’m starting it very excited, with a lot of desire. I hope I can start feeling well and start with a good preseason, adding minutes to be in the best shape when the official matches come.”

Could we actually see Lionel Messi again at the World Cup 2026, four years after lifting the infamous trophy?

The World Cup And The Club World Cup

2025, and possibly 2026, might prove to be crucial years for a soon-to-be 38-year-old Lionel Messi. Not only is the World Cup on the Horizon, but also the opening of the Club World Cup, in which different clubs worldwide compete against each other in June.

It is set to be held in the United States. Inter Miami are drawn alongside Palmerias, Portuguese heavyweights Porto, and Saudi Pro League side Al Ahly in Group A.

Messi, when asked about the new tournament, said:

“We have a lot of matches beforehand. The truth is that it is a year full of many matches. The Club World Cup is not until June. We have a difficult group as well, and we will fight for it. We are going to compete, but first think about what is coming, as we have many matches before that.”
