Liverpool F.C. sit atop both the Premier League and Champions League tables. Led by Mohamed Salah, the Reds are playing like the best in Europe, if not the world. They’ve come up just short in the past few years, but this season, they could be on course for their fourth treble in team history.
Leading The English Premier League
Halfway through their season with 19 games played, Liverpool are in first place in the English Premier League. With a record of 14 wins, four draws, and one loss, they have 46 points and are six points ahead of both Arsenal F.C. and Nottingham Forest F.C. They have a league-leading 47 goals while only giving up 19 goals, tied for the second-least.
So far this year, they’ve had big wins against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Bournemouth. The team’s draws have come against Arsenal, Newcastle, Fulham, and most recently Manchester United in a thrilling game at Anfield that finished 2-2. Their sole loss of the season came against Nottingham Forest in their only goalless game of the year. Salah leads the team in both goals (18) and assists (13) while playing in all their league matches.
Due to extreme weather, Liverpool’s match against Everton F.C. earlier in the season was postponed to be played later. Even with one less game played, they still lead the league by six points.
Leading The Champions League
Through six of their first eight UCL matches this year in the league phase, Liverpool is the only team to win all six. They have 13 goals scored and only one given up, with Inter Milan the only other team to allow just one goal so far. With 18 points at the top of the table, they sit above F.C. Barcelona, Arsenal, and Bayer Leverkusen and look like they’ll take the top spot heading into the knockout rounds.
Of their Champions League fixtures, Liverpool has beaten Real Madrid, A.C. Milan, Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, Bologna, and Girona. They are the only team to go undefeated out of all 36 squads in the competition. Of their 13 goals scored, Luis Diaz has contributed three, while Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Alexis Mac Allister each have two. Salah leads the team in assists with four, while seven other players each have one.
Liverpool’s 13 goals only come in tied for third amongst the UCL ranks, but they’ve beaten the tough competition in the form of last year’s La Liga winners, Real Madrid, and the Bundesliga’s Leverkusen. Barcelona leads the Champions League in goals with 21, sitting second in the table with a 5-0-1 record with 15 points.
Salah Is In The Prime Of His Career
Salah leads the Premier League in goals, ahead of Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, and Cole Palmer. Each of the three were the top scorers from last season, while Salah finished seventh with 18 goals. Salah has already hit his goal total from last year, and we’re only halfway through the season. He is on pace to finish with 36 EPL goals, which would tie Haaland’s record in the 2022-23 season. In terms of assists, he is also leading the Premier League with 13. He finished all of last season with 10, which is the mark of the current second-place leader, Bukayo Saka.
Halfway through the season, Salah has already hit his marks from last year. In every match, he finds himself involved; whether scoring or passing,ย he gets the job done at a higher clip than anyone else in the Premier League. His two goals in the Champions League aren’t near the top of the leaderboard, but his four assists are tied with four other players for the most in the tournament.
In 25 EPL and UCL matches this year, Salah has 20 goals and 17 assists.
End Of My Liverpool F.C. Rant
Along with Salah, Liverpool has many other players that nearly any European team would love to have. Of those include Diaz (11 G, 2 A), (Cody Gakpo (8 G, 3 A), Trent Alexander-Arnold (G, 5 A), Virgil Van Dijk (2 G, A), and Darwin Nunez (3 G, 2 A), leading them in both competitions this season. Head coach Arne Slot recently came out and said they are satisfied with their squad going into the January transfer window, so not many moves are expected.
Liverpool have just seemed to get everything right this year. After finishing third in the Premier League last year and fifth the year before, they’ll easily cruise to the title if they keep up this run. They are currently second in all-time EPL titles, and a win this year would tie them with Manchester United for the most all-time with 20. They’ve also won the Champions League six times, and a win this year would tie them with A.C. Milan for the second most. If things keep going according to plan, the 2024-25 season could be the most successful in club history.
Liverpool’s next match will be on Wednesday, against Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals. That will be followed by a match against Accrington in Saturday’s third round of the FA Cup. They will resume Premier League play next Tuesday as they will travel to Nottingham Forest.
