Road losses count the same in the SEC, and Kentucky failed to answer the call in a game they led down the stretch.
Point Guard Blues
Lamont Butler has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, and Jaxson Robinson is dealing with a wrist injury. It’s been a next-up mentality for the Cats, but unfortunately, on Saturday night, it caught up to them.
There is no true point guard to lead them, with Travis Perry filling in. Tonight the freshman mistakes proved costly, especially in a game of this magnitude—a game they needed to steal on the road with the upcoming schedule.
Kentucky just let two guys single handedly beat them.

I understand they’re undermanned, but good lord. Texas is not a good basketball team. At all.
Kentucky shot 6-24 from three today (25.0%).

If UK hit just 2 more threes to shoot a still below-average 33.3% from deep, we'd be saying that this game was a coaching masterclass and a gutsy performance.
Losing sucks and we should have won, but a healthy Kentucky wins by 20. pic.twitter.com/KUCxWzRmcf
Tre Johnson Is Legit
Tre Johnson and Tramon Mark combined for 58 of Texas’ 82 points, essentially winning the game for them. Even though Texas didn’t shoot the ball great, making winning plays down the stretch proved crucial as they picked up a vital win to save their season.

Johnson scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win, proving to be one of the top picks in next year’s draft as well. His scoring ability and impact changed the game for Texas, and he simply took over. Hell of a game, young man!
Injury Bug Biting Cats
The games are getting more brutal as the season progresses, and Kentucky doesn’t resemble the team it was early on. Andrew Carr isn’t performing the same, and with Jaxson and Lamont Butler out, they aren’t performing like they need to be.
The SEC tournament and March Madness are just around the corner, and having their leaders on the court would boost Kentucky’s chances of making a deep run. Here’s hoping for a swift recovery for their injured players and a strong finish to the season!
Amari Williams Is Playing At An Elite Level
Williams recently recorded his fifth double-double of the season and third in SEC play during Kentucky’s win over Tennessee. Tonight, he did all he could to keep Kentucky in the game, from posting up and scoring to hitting a three-pointer.

I don’t think I have seen him hit one in warmups this season. A good time to hit it!pic.twitter.com/Ddrimmk9rh
Just a week ago against Ole Miss, Williams recorded a triple-double in a loss. It’s all coming together for him down the stretch, and seeing it happen for him is one of the bright spots. Early in the season, Amari struggled at times, but his play lately has earned him some top recognition.
End Of My Kentucky Rant
It’s understandable to feel that the season is on the brink, especially with the recent challenges and injuries they’ve faced. The hope is that Kentucky’s key players will recover in time to make a significant impact. Their victories against opponents like Duke, Tennessee (twice!), and their rival Louisville have been truly impressive and have showcased the team’s potential.
The next few weeks are crucial for Kentucky. They have a winnable game at home against Vanderbilt on Wednesday night, followed by a challenging road game against Alabama on Saturday. A win at home would definitely help regain some momentum and confidence for the team.
The home game against Vanderbilt presents a prime opportunity to start building that momentum. Banding together and gaining some momentum before the SEC tournament could set the stage for an impressive run.
It’s been a season of highs and lows for the Wildcats. There’s still time to turn things around and finish strong.
