Arne Slot has given an update on the injury timline of Liverpool’s duo, Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez, who have been unavailable recently.
Arne Slot has shared with the media the extent of Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez’s injuries and whether they will be out for a long time or not.
The Liverpool duo have both sustained injuries that made them unavailable for selection. Jota’s injury came after Liverpool’s draw against Nottingham Forest where he scored a goal to secure a point. Slot revealed that the Portuguese “overloaded a certain muscle” in the match. This led to Jota being absent from Liverpool’s squad for their match against Brentford which ended with a 2-0 win for Slot’s side.
On the other hand, Gomez has been out due to injury for a longer period. His hamstring problem left him unavailable since the end of 2024 and until now. He picked this injury during Liverpool’s match against West Ham United in late December.
Slot made sure to give an update on the two Liverpool players’ injuries. He stated that he expects Jota to be back soon. His return will happen before that of Gomez. Slot made sure to clarify that both will be out for weeks and not months.
“Maybe Jota [will be back] a bit earlier than Joe. Both of them are expected to be back with us in weeks rather than months. But I’ve said many times before that the last stage of rehab is the most difficult one, or the one that sometimes add a few days or not. It’s clear that we are expecting them to be back with us in the upcoming weeks. It is always difficult to say exactly how long it is. Both of them are not going to be out for months, that’s for sure, as long as the rehab goes as planned.”
With Jota and Gomez out, Liverpool will have to find solutions to replace them. One solution that have worked well is giving a chance for Darwin Nunez to play more. The striker already took advantage of his playing opportunity against Brentford. He managed to score twice to give Liverpool a much-needed three points to keep them firmly on top of the EPL.
Slot commented on Nunez’s performance as well during the press conference.
“I don’t think it’s the first time he is in a situation like this. Even this season, he’s been in such a situation when Diogo Jota was out for five-six weeks. He has had a long run of games with Jurgen Klopp as well. He is in a good place now because he has scored two. At the moment, we have four attackers who are top fit and ready to start. Darwin is one of them. Of course, it increases the chance for Darwin to get more playing time if one of them is injured and especially if it’s a number nine.”
Liverpool’s fans will be hoping that Slot keeps finding solutions to the injuries before they affect the team. With two key players injured, Liverpool’s defense and offense might be affected. Slot has managed to keep the good results coming despite this. The fans will surely hope that this continue for as long as possible.
