Manchester City’s match against Brighton ended in a draw. City’s Ilkay Gundogan talked about how the team lost their confidence.
Ilkay Gundogan has talked about the recent match against Brighton, that ended with both teams going home with a point. The German shared his thoughts about how the team felt after the own goal that found the back of their net.
Manchester City’s fans might have been hopeful during the match against Brighton that things were returning to normal. The team was up with 2-0, which sometimes feel like a comfortable result, but it wasn’t like that.
Unfortunately for City, Abdukodir Khusanov scored an own goal that helped Brighton come back and end the game in a draw instead of the expected win.
Gundogan talked after the game about what exactly happened and how the team lost their confidence. He said, according to Manchester City’s official website:
“I feel personally very disappointed. After getting twice in front and actually playing quite well. It’s a bit frustrating to not get the three points. I think we were able to limit their possession. Second half, after conceding the second, it felt like we dropped in confidence and belief. We dropped a little bit and gave away easy chances.”
Gundogan also talked about how Manchester City’s efforts are sometimes not enough:
“It’s important to stay calm. Of course, mistakes happen even at this level. The opposition are so good. Every game is tough. Then when you concede sometimes you try not to do overdo things. We need to expect the best from everyone every single day. I thought we had a good week of training. We want to transmit that power and energy into the game. Sometimes it isn’t enough.”
Everyone at Manchester City, and not just Gundogan, can see that the team is struggling. This isn’t the same team that brought terror to its opponents for several years.
Pep Guardiola needs to change things around because right now, things aren’t looking good either for him or for the team.
Gundogan is right about the confidence part. Manchester City have been looking unconfident for a while now, and this isn’t in their favor.
Manchester City will be hoping that such a scenario doesn’t happen again, especially since every game is crucial now. The team still has to secure a position in the top four. With their current results, it seems even more unlikely.
