Rumors have been circulating for the past few days about Manchester United’s interest in Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams. With the Marcus Rashford situation looming, Manchester United is already assessing options on the left wing, with the Spanish International likely their top target.
The 21-year-old was very close to signing for Barcelona in the summer transfer window, but due to the Catalan club’s financial crisis, the deal could not happen. Nico Williams was one of the star performers in the UEFA EURO 2024, in which Spain ultimately triumphed as the champion.
He had two goals and an assistant to his name and wore the famous Spanish red. Certainly, he caught the attention of Barcelona, who did everything in their power to add another talent to their already stellar core of Spanish players. The move, however, did not go through, and the winger decided to stay at Bilbao.
Manchester United number 10 Marcus Rashford has been consistently left out of the squad by Ruben Amorim, and the situation depicts the Portuguese’s perspective of Rashford’s future at the club. United have put the England International up for sale, and both parties should move on now. With the club’s financial situation and the 27-year-old’s inconsistent performances and off-field issues, Amorim believes it is in Manchester United’s best interest that the winger leaves the club as soon as possible.
Nico Williams has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with Spanish Outlet El Desmarque reporting that the Red Devils have already contacted William’s agents and will be willing to activate the €60 million release clause if Rashford leaves for a decent amount.
The deal could be challenging considering the recent financial woes that have limited the club’s transfer budget for January and possibly summer. Manchester United also might face tough competition for the 22-year-old, with PSG and Bayern Munich just around the corner. Bayern has been reported to show a keen interest in the Bilbao winger, as reported by Florian Plettenberg from Sky Sports Germany.
Manchester United sits 14th in the Premier League table and is desperate to bolster its attacking options and address its goal-scoring issues. Nico Williams can provide a new dynamic down the left flank for the Red Devils, but United’s financial crisis could be a major factor if the deal happens.
