The leading scorer in Green Bay Packers franchise history is calling it a career. Former Packers, Rams, and Giants NFL kicker Mason Crosby has announced his retirement from the National Football League. The 40-year-old played 17 seasons in the league: all but one in Green Bay.
Packers Legend Mason Crosby Announces NFL Retirement
It’s not every day that a sixth-round pick from Colorado has a lengthy career in the NFL. The 193rd pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, Mason Crosby, won the starting kicking job after his first preseason, beating out Dave Rayner. He made an immediate impact, earning multiple NFC honors, while scoring more points by a kicker in Packers season history.
Over time, Crosby would be known as one of the most reliable and accurate kickers in the league. He was a key contributor to the Packers’ Super Bowl run in 2010-11, as he was nearly perfect during the postseason. Crosby’s four extra points and field goal helped Green Bay win 31-25 over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2011, Crosby was rewarded with a five-year contract extension. He paid it back by making a franchise-record 58-yard field goal. During the 2015 NFL season, he became Green Bay’s all-time leading point-scorer, passing Ryan Longwell. After earning another contract extension, Crosby became a hero after he made the game-winning 51-yard field goal against the Dallas Cowboys to send the Packers to the NFC Championship Game in 2017.
During the 2018 season, Crosby started to struggle. He missed four field goals against the Detroit Lions. A missed game-tying field goal against the Arizona Cardinals later that season ended up costing head coach Mike McCarthy his job. Fortunately, he rebounded in the 2019 season, making 22 out of 24 field goals. Crosby would also finish with a perfect season in 2020 making all 16 field goal attempts.
After the Packers missed the postseason in 2022-23, the team attempted to get younger and embrace a rebuild following quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ departure. The team elected not to bring back Mason Crosby and drafted his replacement, Anders Carlson. After signing to the Rams practice squad in late December 2023, Crosby signed to the Giants roster and played in three games.
While being enshrined in Canton isn’t likely, Mason Crosby is one of the all-time greatest Packers to wear the green and gold, and will one day be inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Crosby on his retirement!
