The Celtics are looking to defend their NBA title after winning it last year, which makes it challenging to identify an x-factor for this season. The best candidate appears to be their big-man duo. Kristaps Porzingis is expected to miss the first couple of months this season due to surgery he underwent in the off-season, which means that Al Horford will have to take on a greater role during the regular season.
Although Horford remains a productive player, at 38 years old, he is more suited for a bench role than playing 30 minutes a night as a starter. Boston will likely utilize Xavier Tillman and Neemias Queta more, but neither player can provide the same versatility as a defender or floor spacer that Horford offers, nor can they stretch the defense like Porzingis can. Throughout his career, Porzingis has faced injuries, and his absence will be noticeable.
While the team managed without him during last year’s playoffs, when he missed some games, the competition in the Eastern Conference has improved, and Horford is not getting any younger. Given Horford’s age and Porzingis’s injury history, the center position may pose more challenges for Boston than initially expected. Despite these concerns, the Celtics remain an elite team and are favorites in the Eastern Conference, with or without Porzingis. However, the center position could ultimately determine their success this season.
The Nets may be the weakest team in the league this year. Their X-factor needs to demonstrate an improved overall game and the potential to be a building block for the future. Cam Thomas can score with the best of them, as he is a tough shot-taker and maker. However, since entering the league, he has not shown much beyond his scoring ability.
This season, he has the opportunity to take charge without Mikal Bridges on a Nets roster that lacks talent. He needs to prove he can create opportunities for his teammates as well as for himself. Last year, Thomas averaged 22.5 points per game in 31 minutes while only recording 3 assists (a career high). With no other pure scorer on the roster, he will need to take around 20 shots a night this season, but those shots can’t be forced.
If he wants to become more than just a high-scoring sixth man in the league, he must improve his all-around game. If Thomas is to become the Nets’ shooting guard of the future, it will be his passing that ultimately gets him there, not simply high-volume shooting and low efficiency.
In this rebuilding year, with a plethora of draft picks thanks to the Bridges trade, the Nets will involve Thomas in the rebuilding process one way or another. He will either solidify his spot on the roster or be traded to another team for more draft capital.
Julius Randle was initially the player selected, but a surprising blockbuster trade between the Knicks and Timberwolves changed the dynamics. In exchange for Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round pick, the Knicks acquired perennial All-Star and All-NBA center Karl-Anthony Towns. The team’s goal is to construct an ideal lineup around Jalen Brunson.
Randle’s odd fit with the team, combined with Mitchell Robinson’s injury concerns, left the Knicks’ starting lineup uncertain. However, after the trade, a lineup featuring Brunson, Towns, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and OG Anunoby offers strong perimeter defense and spacing. Towns, as the best shooter on the roster, will be a crucial factor in opening up the floor for his teammates.
Despite this, it remains Brunson’s team, and for the lineup to succeed, Towns will need to adjust to playing more off the ball than he did last season. He will have to accept a role as a secondary scoring option and floor spacer; he is no longer the central player in the offense. Another key aspect that makes Towns the X-factor for the Knicks is his defense.
Although he is a competent defender, he often commits unnecessary fouls early in games, which leads to him spending significant time on the bench. Head coach Tom Thibodeau tends to give his starters heavy minutes, and with uncertainty surrounding Robinson’s health, Towns may be asked to play around 34 minutes per night. Additionally, he will need to anchor the defense in the paint, an area where he does not particularly excel.
The Timberwolves had brought in Rudy Gobert partially to allow Towns to shift to power forward and to provide assistance in the paint. While the Knicks have elite wing defenders, Towns will lack support in the paint, which could cause challenges when facing dominant players like Joel Embiid and Bam Adebayo in the Eastern Conference.
If Towns can effectively fulfill his role without overexerting himself, the Knicks’ offense should rank among the best in the league. If he can hold his ground defensively, the Knicks might emerge as title contenders.
The Sixers made a significant move this offseason by signing Paul George to a max contract, and they also added a versatile wing defender with an underrated offensive skillset, Caleb Martin. After two seasons of minimal production in Charlotte, Martin signed a two-way deal with the Heat and exceeded everyone’s expectations. He was a valuable bench player for Miami in his first season, but during the 2022-2023 playoffs, he emerged as a two-way star.
He performed well in the first two playoff series, and in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Celtics, he averaged 19 points and 6 rebounds per game, helping secure a 4-3 series victory. There was hope that his postseason success would carry over into the following year, but injuries hindered his performance, and he became a free agent. The Sixers believed Martin was the best power forward available on the market and saw him as a great fit alongside George and Kelly Oubre.
The main reasons Martin is considered Philly’s X-factor are his inconsistent shooting and his somewhat limited size for a power forward. Given the roster construction of the 76ers, he may be tasked with guarding larger opponents, which could pose challenges.
Although Martin can defend positions 1-3 due to his skills, he stands at just 6’5″ and weighs 205 pounds, which may make it difficult for him to handle bigger players when guarding the 4s. Oubre, being more physical, might take on the assignment of guarding larger opponents, but if Martin can effectively play the power forward position, the Sixers could have an even more formidable starting five than expected.
While Embiid, Maxey, and George are known offensive stars, the Sixers need players who can step up defensively. Martin is likely the best defender on the roster after Embiid and George. He needs to deliver his best performance consistently, as his effectiveness on both ends of the floor will be crucial for Philadelphia’s success.
Trading Pascal Siakam might suggest that the Raptors are entering a mini rebuild. They also dealt OG Anunoby to New York in exchange for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley. Quickley, who had one of the best seasons as a sixth man for the Knicks, is seen as a player who could excel as a starter.
Last season, Quickley averaged 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists for the Raptors, all of which were career highs. His outstanding performance earned him a new contract, establishing him as the team’s franchise point guard. The Raptors believe he can build on his stats from the 2023-24 season. Quickley is lightning-fast and incredibly agile, which allows him to create his own shots and set up opportunities for others. He achieved impressive numbers in just half a season with his new team, and with a full offseason to acclimate, he should feel more comfortable with the Raptors.
Importantly, Quickley and star player Scottie Barnes complement each other perfectly. Barnes is a point forward with a strong understanding of the game, making him an excellent playmaker and a consistent triple-double threat. Quickley excels with the ball in his hands but can also function effectively off the ball, as he is an above-average three-point shooter. Together, they form a formidable pick-and-roll duo that poses challenges for opposing defenses.
Whether it’s Barnes setting a screen for Quickley or vice versa, their synergy creates mismatches against smaller defenders. While the Raptors are not yet contenders, Quickley’s potential makes him an X-factor for the team. If he can elevate his game this season, it will significantly increase the Raptors’ potential for both the current season and the future.
