With the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings sniffing at this list let’s have look at the NFL top-five power ranking heading into Week 16. Most of these teams excel on one side of the ball while slipping on the other outside of one team that has remained the most consistent.
#5 Kansas City Chiefs (13-1)
The Kansas City Chiefs continue to rely heavily on their defense, and their defense continues to deliver. The team allows fewer than 19 points per game (13.7 over the last three games). The offense has slipped out of the top ten, but with their average scoring margin staying around +5.0 to +6.0, they continue to be a Super Bowl contender. Patrick Mahomes remains questionable heading into the weekend but it doesn’t seem to be anything that would linger into the playoffs. As the first team to clinch a playoff berth, and with only one loss, they have built up a comfortable enough lead heading down the stretch.
#4 Green Bay Packers (10-4)
The Green Bay Packers offense has found its stride, and has been effective on the ground or through the air. Running back Josh Jacobs is already over 1,100 yards, ranking him third in the lead. Jordan Love seems to be taking better care of the ball after throwing 11 interceptions we have seen in December. One could argue their defense has been the more unexpected surprise, holding down a top-ten spot this season. The Green Bay Packers rank in the top ten on both sides of the ball, and show no signs of slowing down.
#3 Detroit Lions (12-2)
The Detroit Lions offense is as potent as ever, averaging the most points in the league this season, while only trailing the Baltimore Ravens in offensive yardage. The defense, in fairness, is dealing with plentiful injuries but they are starting to crack. The season average of 20.1 points against is good, but when you look at the 33.0 average against over the last three games, a new sense or urgency can be felt. The defense will look to piece it together and find some health to back up their dangerous offense heading into the playoffs.
#2 Buffalo Bills (11-3)
The Bills offense is the hottest in the league over the last three games, with a scoring average of 41.7 ppg. One could complain about the defense, which has averaged 32.0 points against over those three games. Quarterback Josh Allen leads the league in quarterback rating and appears to be the frontrunner for MVP. It’s safe to say the Bills are the most dangerous team in the AFC right now.
#1 Philadelphia Eagles (12-2)
Despite the best defense in the league, and a top-ten offense, people still tend to be sleeping on the Philadelphia Eagles. There’s no conversation about one side of the ball starting to slip, and they are easily the best overall team. With the best defense and arguably the best running back in the league, they look to be in ultimate control of the football.
NFL Week 16
That wraps up the NFL Week 16 top-five power rankings. It will be interesting to see which offensive powerhouse can figure out their defense. and separate themselves from the pack.
