With the Four Nations Face-off tournament over, NHL teams must make deals before time runs out. NHL rumors are prevalent. The NHL trade deadline is just 12 days away. General managers will be stepping up their game to improve their rosters. That being said, let’s dig into the latest NHL rumors.
Chicago Blackhawks – Seth Jones
NHL rumors: Per – Lyle Richardson – thehockeynews.com. Three years into an eight-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, Seth Jones is willing to consider moving on to a contender.
While Jones hasn’t officially requested a trade, he and his agent have discussed the possibility with Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson. Jones realizes his contract won’t be easy to move. He’s earning an average annual value of $9.5 million through 2029-30. His full no-movement clause gives him total control over potential trade destinations.
He wants to win a Cup, which doesn’t happen soon in Chicago. His elevated salary may require a three-team trade scenario. If he isn’t moved by the approaching NHL trade deadline, it could happen over the summer instead. With the increased salary cap limits announced recently, a deal could be worked out for the big-minute puck-moving defenseman.
The Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Winnipeg Jets could be teams interested in his services. However, the Hawks will likely be forced to retain up to half of Jones’ cap hit to consummate a deal.
St. Louis Blues – active in trade talks
NHL rumors: Per – thefourthperiod.com. Blues forwards Brayden Schenn, Pavel Buchnevich, and Jordan Kyrou are among the names swirling about the trade winds as speculation ramps up.
David Pagnotta of thefourthperiod.com says, “I think all three of those guys are out there right now.” “There was that report that correctly reported that Brayden Schenn is out there and available, and that really kind of spiraled things in St. Louis. It really had a trickle effect throughout the first week in Montreal of the 4 Nations tournament. A lot of people were talking about what St. Louis could possibly do.”
With a full no-trade clause, Schenn has three years remaining on his three-year $6.5 million deal. The Vegas Golden Knights have shown interest in Schenn. Shea Theodore may be out until the end of the season, and his $5.2 million cap hit would become available if he is placed on long-term injury reserve.
Buchnevich, 29, has a $5.8 million cap hit this season, but his six-year, $48 million contract extension kicks in July 1. He also has a 12-team no-trade list this season.
Kyrou, 26, is in the second season of an eight-year, $65 million contract, and his full no-trade clause does not take effect until July 1.
Keep an eye on the Blues. Things are happening.
Buffalo Sabres – Michael Kesselring
NHL rumors: Per – Matthew Fairburn – nytimes.com (the athletic). Buffalo has a surplus of forwards, and Utah has extra defensemen.
Could a Keselring for Jack Quinn trade work? Add in Kevin Stunlund, and a deal could be made. It could help both teams. Kesselring would create an awesome blueline with Owen Power alongside Kesselring. Stenlund is an exceptional faceoff artist.
The question remains: would the Utah Hockey Club trade Kesselring? He is an upcoming young defenseman, and the Utah club still has Maveric Lamoureaux awaiting in the AHL once he recovers from injury.
Utah’s better option would be a deal for Dylan Cozens. If the Sabres would accept a trade for Cozens, can adding Lawson Crouse to the Kesselring trade proposal make it happen? Crouse is a large 6′-4″, 214-pound power forward. He is having a down season but has a reasonable $4.3 million contract through 2026-27.
Crouse would give the Sabres more experience and grit, which they lack. Cozens has a $7.10 million cap hit through the 2029-30 season. Utah has about $26 million in cap space and could advance their forward group by adding Cozens.
With young forwards like Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and Dylan Guenther, the Utah team would be set for the future. The Sabres need to do something to get them going, and this could be the start of accomplishing that goal.
