With the Four Nations Face-off tournament scheduled from February 10-21, NHL teams are pressing to get some deals done before time runs out. NHL rumors are prevalent. While there is no ban on completing trades during the tournament, it is unlikely that league general managers will be looking to make any deals. The NHL trade deadline is just 23 days away. That being said, let’s dig into the latest NHL rumors.

Winnipeg Jets – Brock Boeser

NHL Rumors: Per – Murat Ates – nytimes.com (The Athletic). The Jets have their eye on forward Brock Boeser.

Boeser has a 10-team no-trade list, but it’s doubtful that Winnipeg is on that list. The Jets considered selecting Boeser in the 2015 draft with the 17th selection but chose Kyle Connor instead. In other words, the player and the team may still have mutual interest. Boeser has 18 goals and 17 assists in 48 games this season.

The Jets could either work a trade before the March 7th deadline or acquire him as an unrestricted free agent this summer. Boeser has 18 goals this season, with 14 being power-play tallies. The Jets rank first in the NHL in power play with a 33.3 percent success rate. Adding Boeser would make them the envy of the league and a team that can score at will with the man advantage.

If Boeser is sent to Winnipeg, he would be their second-line right-wing. He would fit nicely on a line consisting of Cole Perfetti between Nikolaj Ehlers and Boeser on a scoring line.

Detroit Red Wings –  Vladimir Tarasenko

NHL Rumors: Per – Sam Stockton – thehockeynews.com. Per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Detroit may be looking to move the struggling winger ahead of the trade deadline.

Tarasenko didn’t want to leave the Florida Panthers after winning a Cup there. He couldn’t get a contract solution done. He is struggling this season, with just seven goals and 15 assists in 53 games. His $4.75 million AAV contract, good through next season, is beginning to burden the Wings. It won’t be easy to trade him at that price with his meager statistics. He is on pace to score just 11 goals, nowhere near his usual 30-goal performances of past years.

What the Red Wings may do if they can’t trade him is to buy him out this summer. They could buy out the second year of Tarasenko’s deal at just $1,583,333 against the cap each of the following two seasons (i.e., a $3,166,667 for next season). The once prolific scorer has slowed down, and the Wings are looking for a solution. Even without Tarasenko’s offensive contributions, the Wings have been burning it up lately. They won seven straight before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

New York Rangers – Mario Ferraro

NHL Rumors

NHL Rumors: Per – Joshua Deeds – nyrangersinsider.com. If the Rangers trade Ryan Lindgren, Ferraro would be a suitable replacement.

The Rangers are attempting to strengthen their blueline, and Ferraro could help. He is a sizeable defender, standing 6′-0″ and 210 pounds. The New York Rangers currently have $10.5 million in cap space and will have $16.5 million at the trade deadline if things don’t change by then. He averages over 21 minutes of ice time and would be a reasonable addition with a $3.25 million AAV contract through next season. He has no trade protection, either.

He could be a player that the Rangers could extend since the NHL salary cap will rise over the next three years. He could complement Adam Fox as a blueline partner and be a solid addition to the Rangers’ defense. Ferraro is a solid puck mover and an increasingly effective defender who keeps his cool even when opposing forwards pressure him. Ferraro would be a good place to start if the Rangers want to improve their blueline.
