Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic has agreed to extend his partnership with Andy Murray beyond the Australian Open. The 24-time Grand Slam champion stunned the world after announcing his great rival as his new coach in December last year. According to the announcement, Murray would be Djokovic’s coach at least until the end of the Australian Open.

Djokovic’s Australian Open campaign abruptly in the semifinals, where he couldn’t complete the match against Alexander Zverev due to an injury. The Serb threw in the towel after losing the first set against the German. However, he didn’t comment on the decision to extend the partnership with Murray right away. After recovering from his knee injury, he has shared an update on his collaboration.

We had a chat the day after I finished the tournament and we reflected on the period we spent together. We agreed he was going to take some time and think, speak with his family members and see if he decides to keep working. I expressed my desire to continue the collaboration with him so I am really glad he did accept. It is indefinite in terms of how long we are going to work together, but we agreed most likely in the States and some clay-court tournaments. We will see how it goes after that.

The Novak Djokovic Andy Murray Partnership

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray

Novak Djokovic’s high moment in 2025 was his quarterfinal win at the Australian Open against Carlos Alcaraz. The Serb sustained a knee injury during the first set of the match but regrouped to win in four sets. After the match, he enthusiastically celebrated like we had seen him before. However, the important aspect came when the Serb went to his box and celebrated with Andy Murray.

Unfortunately, all the celebrations were short lived as he lost in the semifinals to Alexander Zverev. Djokovic had not completed his normal practice sessions before the semifinal to preserve his body. However, the limitations in his movement were clearly seen during his semifinal against Zverev. He gave up after the first set and left the court with a series of boos directed from the crowd.

Novak Djokovic’s announcement suggests that Murray will be part of his camp during Indian Wells and Miami. The Serb has not won either of these tournaments since 2016, when he won both of those tournaments in the same season. Astonishingly, he had won the Sunshine double for a third consecutive time in 2016. The Serb is tied with Roger Federer for most titles at Indian Wells (5).

End Of Rant

The partnership of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray is good for tennis. Regardless of how long it goes, it ensures that the tennis world has one big storyline to keep the audience engaged. However, the Serb also needs to start firing with important wins and titles as he chases his 100th ATP title. He has not won an ATP title since winning the World Tour Finals in 2023, and his last title overall was the Olympic Singles Gold medal last August.
