In a major setback for Pakistan cricket, the rising star and dynamic opener Saim Ayub has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks due to a fractured right ankle. The unfortunate injury occurred during the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town, putting his participation in next month’s ICC Champions Trophy in serious doubt.
The incident occurred on the match’s opening day when Ayub twisted his ankle while attempting to field a ball at deep third. Despite immediate medical attention on the field, Ayub could not continue and had to be stretchered off. Following X-rays and an MRI, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that the talented left-hander would need at least six weeks to recover, dealing a significant blow to the team’s aspirations.
Saim Ayub’s injury comes when he was in prolific form across all formats. His recent performances in the ODI series against South Africa were extraordinary, with Ayub scoring two centuries in three matches and playing a pivotal role in Pakistan’s 3-0 series victory. His aggressive stroke play and consistency at the top of the order had earned him a permanent spot in the national squad.
Pakistan’s all-rounder Salman Ali Agha expressed concern over Ayub’s absence, stating that it would be challenging for the team to fill the void left by the opener. “It’s a big blow, especially given the kind of form he’s been in. He would have been a great asset on this wicket,” said Salman. His sentiments were echoed by the coaching staff, who acknowledged the significant impact of Ayub’s absence on the team’s balance.
The injury also disrupts Pakistan’s plans for the Champions Trophy, where Ayub was expected to play a key role. With Pakistan hosting the prestigious tournament, his presence was vital to their chances of clinching the title.
The moment that sidelined Ayub occurred in the seventh over of the first day. Ryan Rickelton’s edge off a delivery had Ayub sprinting toward the boundary in tandem with Aamer Jamal. As Jamal pulled the ball back into play, Ayub positioned himself to relay the throw but lost his balance, twisting his ankle. His immediate reaction and the pain indicated the severity of the injury.
Despite initial hopes that he might be able to return after some treatment, further tests revealed a fracture, ruling out any chance of a quick comeback. The PCB’s statement confirmed that specialists in London would review his reports and recommend a rehabilitation plan. For now, Ayub will stay with the team and travel back to Pakistan next week.
This development adds pressure on Pakistan, who were already trailing 1-0 in the two-match series. Without Ayub at the top, the batting lineup faces an uphill task against a strong South African bowling attack.
