3 Great Options For Seahawks Quarterback In 2023 Draft Class
The Seahawks quarterback of the future will likely be determined in the first round of the NFL Draft next year. Who are their best options to select?
While there is certainly a chance that Drew Lock or Geno Smith wins the title of Seahawks quarterback of the future, that chance is quite small. The Seahawks will likely look to the 2023 NFL Draft for help at the signal caller position, and it will be an excellent time to do so. There are four to six quarterbacks who will likely be selected in the first round, and while that’s always subject to change during the college football season, next year’s quarterback class is looking a great deal stronger than the 2022 class.
With two first round draft picks, the Seahawks will be in a position to pick almost any player they prefer in the top round of the draft next year, and there are three quarterback options I see as the top tier. These three will have the potential to change a franchise, which is something the Seahawks will likely need after the 2022 season.
Bryce Young, Alabama
While I think he will end up not being the first quarterback selected next year, Bryce Young may be the current favorite to go first overall in the 2023 Draft. Alabama’s Heisman Trophy winner is an intriguing player who doesn’t have the size that I would prefer in the next Seahawks quarterback (6’0″, 194 pounds). There’s no doubt that Young was a worthy Heisman candidate in 2021, when he completed almost 67% of his passes for over 4,800 yards and 47 touchdowns. One thing that Alabama always has, though, is an all-star group of receivers, including Jameson Williams and John Metchie III. I would be wary about making such a large investment in Bryce Young.
C.J. Stroud, Ohio State
If by some miracle the Seahawks are drafting in one of the top three spots in the 2023 draft, Stroud would be a great pick. What I like about Stroud over Bryce Young is his size (6’3″, 215 pounds). In terms of a straight size comparison, C.J. Stroud is the Joe Burrow to Bryce Young’s Tua Tagovailoa. Stroud suffers in my mind because of the presence of three excellent receivers who helped him to a Heisman Trophy candidacy in 2021. He’s also the quarterback I expect to go first, so it would likely take a trade to move up in the draft to secure C.J.
Will Levis, Kentucky
Levis is a player who could be irrelevant by the time the 2023 Draft rolls around, but he has the build and raw ability to look a lot like a certain Buffalo Bills quarterback. Levis is 6’3 and 222 pounds, and runs the ball fairly well. He had a decent year in 2021 (66% completion, 2,800 yards and 24 touchdowns), and the only big name in his receiving corps was Wan’Dale Robinson. Levis has a cannon for a right arm and has good pocket presence. If he’s able to show out again during his senior season, he is my favorite candidate for the Seahawks quarterback given the team will likely be selecting around the tenth spot.
There are several options outside of just these three quarterbacks, which we will examine as the college football season progresses. For now, I’ll be watching these three players intently to see if the Seahawks will have a chance to pick one of them up as the quarterback of the future.
