49ers Fire Their Scapegoat After Losing The Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers fell in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Sunday, and 49ers' defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was let go of his duties on Wednesday.

Wilks only spent one season as the 49ers' defensive coordinator, and he was the scapegoat for the team after the Super Bowl loss.

Wilks's defense held Kansas City to only three first-half points, and then it started to unravel in the second half when the 49ers fumbled a punt and set the Chiefs up perfectly in the 49er's red zone, and they scored on the next play.

Kansas City scored on their last four possessions, and one of them was a last-second field goal to force overtime and then, of course, the game-winning touchdown on the Chief's first drive of overtime.

I can't blame Wilks for the 49er's defense being unable to keep Mahomes off the scoreboard in the second half.

At the start of the third quarter, the 49ers picked off Mahomes and set the 49ers' offense up perfectly for some points, but the 49ers stalled with the football and did nothing.

Kyle Shanahan's lack of ability to run the football for the first six plays of the second half and give the ball back to the Chiefs very quickly probably started to wear out the 49ers' defense, and then the fumbled punt happened, and boom, gave, up a touchdown which I can't blame the defense for.

It also didn't help that 49ers star linebacker Dre Greenlaw hurt himself in the first half of the game and would miss the rest with an injury.

The Wilks firing was just tone-deaf, and blaming him for losing the Super Bowl is incorrect. Did the defense play perfectly? No, but were they good enough to win, of course. You should've won the game if you held Kansas City to only one touchdown in regulation.

Shanahan should hold himself accountable after blowing two double-digit Super Bowl leads as a head coach and one as an offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons.
