5 Intriguing Minnesota Vikings To Watch During Training Camp

The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2024 training camp on Saturday, July 27th. There will be a lot of interesting storylines heading into this season, including the development of rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy and 17th overall draft pick Dallas Turner. Here are five Vikings to watch during training camp this summer.

5. Will Reichard

If you're a Minnesota Vikings fan, you likely hold your breath during every field goal attempt. Greg Joseph did an okay job as the Vikings kicker the past three seasons, but the organization decided to move on from the 29-year-old.

Minnesota drafted kicker Will Reichard in the sixth round of the NFL Draft this April, and they're hoping he's the answer at the position in the future. Reichard made 84% of his field goals and 99.3% of his extra point attempts over five years at Alabama. Tracking his progress during practice could be an interesting talking point this summer.

4. Jordan Addison

This week, Jordan Addison was in the news when it was announced that the second-year wide receiver was arrested for a DUI. Addison was also cited last offseason for going 140 MPH on the freeway. Despite the off-the-field drama, Addison had a productive rookie season, catching 70 passes for 911 yards and ten touchdowns.

With little depth at the position, the Vikings need Addison to continue to develop into a reliable second option behind Justin Jefferson. Keep an eye on Addison during camp for any signs of improvement.

3. Dallas Turner

Dallas Turner could be the best value out of the 2024 NFL Draft if he can play at the same level he did for three seasons at Alabama. Turner picked up 22.5 sacks, 32.5 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles with the Crimson Tide. Minnesota selected him as the 17th overall pick in the NFL Draft earlier this year. It'll be exciting to see what defensive coordinator Brian Flores does with the former All-American, and that all starts at training camp.

2. Sam Darnold

It seems that Sam Darnold will be the starting quarterback when the Vikings begin the 2024 season against the New York Giants. The former first-overall pick has bounced around the league following a disappointing three years with the New York Jets, but will Minnesota be the place where he can put it all together? Darnold will have elite offensive weapons around him in Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson. Look for the QB to form that chemistry with his star players when camps open on the 27th.

1. J.J. McCarthy

Although he's unlikely to start in Week One, quarterback J.J. McCarthy is the most intriguing player on the Vikings roster entering this season. McCarthy completed 72.3% of his passes for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns last season, leading the Michigan Wolverines to the National Championship. The 21-year-old might not see a ton of game action this year, however a strong outing from McCarthy this summer could be a glimpse into the future of the Minnesota Vikings.
